Why Leaders Need to Understand Their Values and What Drives Them

As leaders, we often focus on strategy, metrics, and bottom-line results. But there’s a foundational aspect that deserves equal attention: our values. Understanding what drives us at our core shapes not only our leadership style but also the impact we have on our teams and organisations.

The Barrett Model Assessment, developed by the Barrett Values Centre, provides a comprehensive tool to evaluate organisation’s & leaders values.

Here’s why leaders should pay attention:

  1. Authentic Leadership: When leaders are aware of their personal values, they can lead authentically. Authenticity builds trust and fosters genuine connections with team members.
  2. Alignment with Purpose: Values guide our purpose. Leaders who align their actions with their core values create a sense of purpose that resonates throughout the organisation.
  3. Decision-Making Clarity: Knowing what truly matters to us simplifies decision-making. When faced with tough choices, our values serve as a compass.
  4. Culture Creation: Leaders shape organisational culture. By embodying and promoting values, we create a positive work environment where everyone thrives.
  5. Resilience and Adaptability: During challenging times, our values provide stability. They help us adapt without compromising our integrity.

Some suggestions support your journey to values driven Leadership..

  1. Reflect: Take time to explore your personal values. What drives you? What principles guide your actions?
  2. Assess: Consider using tools like the Barrett Model Assessment to gain insights into your organisation’s values.
  3. Integrate: Infuse your leadership style with authenticity and purpose. Communicate your values to your team.

Remember, great leaders don’t just manage tasks; they inspire through their values. Let’s lead with intention and create workplaces where purpose and profit coexist harmoniously.

The assessment model created by Richard Barrett is a great evaluation tool Kim Paterson. Can I suggest an additional point 4 to your suggestions to support your journey to values driven Leadership which is to encourage employees to consider how aligned their personal values are with the organization's values?

Exactly, Kim. Values have to be lived, not just talked about. Together with our own purpose, they become our North Star. And not just lived by organisational leaders. We are all leaders of ourselves, even if we don’t lead others. And if we ever find that our own value system or purpose doesn’t align with the lived values or purpose of our organisation and its leaders with role authority, it’s a clear sign to leave.
