Why Letting The Old Story Go Is How You Know Your True Self

There's a Trevor Hall song that has popped into my head at random times over the past 2 weeks.

I'm starting to understand why.

It feels like GOD communicating with me, reminding me of something that THEY'VE been trying to help me with for a long time.

Letting go....

When you hear that phrase, what comes to mind?

Surrender. Trust. Releasing the past.

Or just releasing something that you don't want to carry anymore.

Most of the time when we get to a place of letting go and releasing (or surrender), it's from the end of something, particularly a close relationship or something that we invested a lot of time, care, energy, and even money into.

But we also have attached meanings and interpretations onto the person or situation from our experiences that might or might not fully represent their character, their heart, or what GOD wants us to remember.

When we allow ourselves to let go, we're letting go of everything that isn't LOVE so we can be free from the burdens of pain, regret, and heartache.

However, we often need to allow ourselves to feel these uncomfortable feelings to really let them pass.

Feeling the feelings is how they are released.

This was a hard lesson for me to learn.

Honestly, it's still hard sometimes to sit with my uncomfortable and painful feelings.

But like I said in my previous email about having/being a safe space, we become that for ourselves by showing our hearts and bodies that we aren't running away when things get difficult.

When you can be fully present with yourself in the midst of severe pain, discomfort, and/or your worst fears come to life, you are practicing a strength and power that is highly uncommon.

It's also highly transformative.

This is what I refer to as "leaning into the pain," like I described in my book Be Solid: How To Go Through Hell & Come Out Whole.

Yes, it's very uncomfortable. No, it doesn't feel good. Yes, it's highly necessary for healing. No, you won't want to do it. But that's ok.

You're more than worth it.

It's a refining fire. And what actually burns away are the things keeping you from seeing the unconscious beliefs that caused the pain in the first place.

For me, this has been deep seated beliefs around rejection, abandonment, and not getting what I want.

Which, once I saw them more clearly and dug deeper, realized the real root issue is about worthiness and not believing I'm good enough.

That's just raw honesty.  There's no arrival point in this deep digging and gardening of the heart, mind, and soul.

We just keep going and healing deeper.

And transforming deeper.

I'm light years beyond where I was 7 years ago when I started this journey of farming real LOVE within me.

And I'm not close to being finished.

But the key to it all is like Trevor sings...

"Oh no no no...

You've just got to let that old story go....

You've just got to let that good river flow into Your heart

It's a start...."

What old story are you still holding onto?

What story are you telling yourself about your past relationships, family experiences, jobs, money, etc that have you feeling less than or believing that you are unworthy of what you want?

Think about that.

We all have old stories that we subconsciously hold onto without being aware of it.

As little debilitating thoughts come up, notice what they are. See them.

If there are things in your life and relationships that you wish were different, notice the patterns.

Are there any patterns that people seem to have who don't know each other but seem to behave in the same way towards you?

Question these stories. Be curious. Explore.

Not to fix. But to understand yourself. Like Thich Nhat Hahn says, "To LOVE is to Understand."

Everything here has to do with our self-concept, our inner most beliefs and stories that we hold to be true at a subconscious level.

Changing your life is about changing your inner story, your inner beliefs, your self-concept.
