Why is there a shortage of vegetable oils? Wikifarmer explains.
Since the beginning of 2020, almost all sectors of the economy have been deeply affected by the phenomena of the last few years, but it seems that the end of this global crisis is not coming soon.
The Coronavirus pandemic, extreme weather conditions, reduced food production, high energy prices, problems in the supply chain and export restrictions were only the beginning of the shortage of vegetable oils or cooking oils, which deteriorated rapidly after the outbreak of war.
And as the war between Ukraine and Russia develops, there is concern about even greater problems having an impact on the food chain.
Shortages of basic goods and commodities inevitably lead to price increases, based on the law of supply and demand. Consumers around the world are finding it difficult to meet their needs for basic goods such as cooking oil.
Below is an analysis of all the simultaneous situations that have led to this increase:
WAR SITUATION
This was of course to be expected, since Russia and Ukraine are responsible for about 70% of the world's supply of sunflower oil, but more specifically, the European Union imports about 40% of its sunflower oil needs from Ukraine.
Official Reuters figures show a 137.5% increase in the price of oils in recent months, since, due to the shortage in the production and export of sunflower oil, there has been a shift to alternatives such as rapeseed, soy or palm oil. According to Wikifarmer, comparing prices between producers on the platform, vegetable oil prices have reached record levels, measuring increases of up to 38% since the beginning of the year. This problem has a direct impact on the food production chain, tourism, catering and the industrial sector.
With the Consumer Price Index at its highest point ever, and the FAO index on oils up 91% since June last year, we look at other global data that is evolving right now.
Producers are facing obstacles such as labour shortages that have increased the average time needed to produce oil, the symptoms of climate change, pest infestation of crops, all reasons that are leading to the lowest cooking oil stock in a decade.
REDUCED WORKFORCE
In both Malaysia and Indonesia, the workforce declined by ⅓ , following government restrictions on the movement of economic migrants from Indonesia and South Asia due to coronavirus. Automatically this meant that the duration of the harvest could triple. In Malaysia, which is responsible for about 33% of the world's palm oil exports, harvests have fallen by about 7.5% since last year. In turn, the shortage of manpower has increased the risk of more pests, infections, rats, etc.
CLIMATE CHANGE
In western Canada, canola planting occurred in the driest soils of the last century, which pushed rapeseed oil prices to historic highs.

Repeated heat waves burned crops in much of the Canadian prairies, leading the USDA to estimate a drop in rapeseed oil production of about 75%, the lowest recorded since the previous decade. This dramatic drop in rapeseed oil production is confirmed by the Wikifarmer data, where while demand for rapeseed oil is high, producers are struggling to find the quantities needed to meet buyers' needs.
Climate change, including in Mediterranean countries, is causing a rise in temperature and a decrease in rainfall, which is also affecting the quality of olive oil production. This is not so much a concern about the viability of olive trees as it is about adapting cultivation needs and the quality of the final product.
WHAT WIKIFARMER'S BIG BUYERS' DATA SHOW
Of the oil types, Wikifarmer's big buyers tend to prefer sunflower oil as the cheapest oil, however, after the war in Ukraine we have noticed that they have been forced to switch to soybean and palm oil in order to secure supplies.
Wikifarmer analysed the data on the platform, which saw an explosion of sunflower oil searches in the first weeks after the war started, attracting dozens of foreign vegetable oil producers, securing some of the lowest prices on the market. However, we were struck by the fact that before the war the market prices were between 1.1-1.3 euros /L, while afterwards the price shot up to over 3 euros immediately after the start of the war.
A large hotel in Crete that is a Wikifarmer customer has purchased 4 months of stock for their business needs from our platform, ensuring a stability in prices and quantities stored. This is just one example and describes a pattern where large businesses tend to stock large quantities of oils with orders that provide them with security of supply for a period of time but also the lowest possible price at wholesale.
Similarly, a large industry that is a customer on the Wikifarmer platform turned to imports from overseas through the platform, comparing prices from January 2022 from different oil producers around the world to enable it to meet all of its business's oil needs.
THE FUTURE
The next day, according to Wikifarmer, looks optimistic and estimates a drop in oil prices. Greece cannot match the edible oil production rates of other countries such as Russia and Ukraine, but it is estimated that according to the country's plan, oil production will become independent of imports to create sufficiency and lower prices.
The Ministry of Rural Development and Food notes that there is likely to be an increase in domestic sunflower oil production, while Greece has already asked the European Union to approve crop subsidies for the period 2023-2027 as an incentive for Greek farmers. This possibility is confirmed by articles from experts that we have collected in the Wikifarmer library and also by our producers, as our article on sunflower cultivation is one of the top trending articles in our entire library. At the same time, and given that sunflower production is relatively easy and fast, many other countries are expected to follow the same path, resulting in falling prices worldwide, as the futures of this particular product already show.
