Why Success is Overrated. My Case for Embracing Failure and the Benefits of Learning from It
Today I want to talk about something that might surprise you. Success, as it is commonly defined, is overrated.
Now, before you close this newsletter and write me off as crazy, hear me out.
We live in a world where success is often seen as the ultimate goal. We celebrate those who have made it to the top of their game, and we strive to replicate their success in our own lives. But what if I told you that success isn't all it's cracked up to be? What if I told you that failure can be just as valuable - if not more so - than success?
Here's the thing: success can be fleeting. You might achieve a goal or hit a milestone, but that feeling of accomplishment can quickly fade away. And if you're always focused on success, you might miss out on some of the most important lessons that come from failure.
Failure is a valuable teacher. When you fail, you're forced to confront your weaknesses and learn from your mistakes. Failure can be painful, but it can also be transformative. It can give you a new perspective on your goals and help you course-correct when you're heading in the wrong direction.
But here's the real kicker: failure can actually lead to greater success in the long run. When you fail, you learn. And when you learn, you grow. You become more resilient, more adaptable, and more creative. You start to see opportunities where others see roadblocks. You become more confident in your abilities because you know that you can overcome obstacles.
In fact, some of the most successful people in history have been serial failures. Take Thomas Edison, for example. He famously said, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." Or look at Steve Jobs, who was famously fired from his own company before returning to lead it to even greater success. These people didn't let failure define them. They used it as a stepping stone to something greater.
Failure helps you learn and grow.
When you fail, you have an opportunity to reflect on what went wrong, what you could have done differently, and what you can do better next time. This kind of self-reflection is crucial for personal growth and development.
Failure builds resilience.
When you experience failure, you learn that you can survive it. You learn that you can pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep going. This resilience is essential for overcoming obstacles and persevering through tough times.
Failure sparks creativity.
When you're forced to think outside the box (an awful expression, I know) to solve a problem, you often come up with innovative and creative solutions that you wouldn't have thought of otherwise. Failure forces you to be resourceful and to find new ways of doing things.

So, what does this mean for you? It means that you should embrace failure. You should welcome it with open arms and see it as an opportunity to learn and grow. Don't be afraid to take calculated risks, even if they might lead to failure. Because, in the end, failure can be the key to your success.
Now, I know some of you might be thinking, "You're crazy. Failure sucks." And you're not wrong. Failure can be tough. But it's also necessary. It's how we learn and grow. So, if you want to be truly successful, you need to embrace failure and all the lessons that come with it.
So, if failure is so great, why are we so afraid of it? Why do we avoid it at all costs? I believe it's because of our society's obsession with success and the fear of being seen as a failure. But the truth is, the only way to achieve true success is to embrace failure and all the lessons it has to offer.
Success is overrated, and failure is underrated. Embracing failure is not only necessary but beneficial for achieving true success. It helps you learn and grow, builds resilience, and sparks creativity. So, don't be afraid to fail. Embrace it, learn from it, and use it to become the best version of yourself.
