Where are the People Persons?
WHY IS IT SO HARD is a book designed to help you navigate today’s social, economic and political challenges and to help you enjoy the “peace of kindness” that comes from knowing and “connecting the dots”.
Why Take This Journey - An Excerpt from the Book's Introduction
As we began to lay the foundation for this project, we wanted to make sure that this book would continue our goal of using our literary work to express and re-enforce our lifelong mantra of shaping thoughts and changing lives for the better.
For the over forty years we have been together as a couple, we have had many new and varied life experiences. We have worked for many companies, have had many job titles, have lived in many places and have enjoyed the enlightenment of many people from many walks of life.
Consequently, some of our most interesting life experiences and stories have found beneficial ways to be incorporated within our work.
In this regard, we decided to use as the preface of this book a real-life story which created the origin of what you have just read. This story was written as an article immediately after completing our 2,200-mile cross-country road trip during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. We believe it does a great job in painting a picture of the emotional landscape surrounding the book’s thesis as well as shedding some light on our mental state at the time.
The last eleven months of 2020 were unprecedented times. It was a period in history that was shared by hundreds of millions of people in every segment of American society.
All non-essential businesses were being shut down. Stay-at-home and shelter-in-place orders were being issued across the country. Schools were abruptly closed and Americans were becoming infected with the virus and dying horrible deaths by the tens of thousands.

Like most other Americans, for months on end, we were isolated in our home, only leaving the house to get groceries. We watched closely as a nation of unexpecting people struggled to come to grips with the unique fear of a global pandemic being caused by a deadly, and uncontrollable disease.
After a few months of watching the news stories, we could not dismiss and had to seriously question the undeniable display of selfishness, hatred, political polarization and healthcare disparities within American society — even during a national crisis.
Based on social and economic status, the degree of hardship and the number of infections and deaths varied significantly from community to community.
From the hoarding of sanitizers and paper products to the inflation of prices for household necessities, to weaponizing the act of wearing a face cover or mask, the glaring lack of national cohesiveness during this global crisis overshadowed the societal unity that was being requested and expressed by many Americans.
At the same time, and in contrast, as we reflected upon the auto incident back in April 2020, we were reminded of Jim, the people person, who, with one small act of kindness, made us feel a real sense of community during crisis. A human feeling that allowed us to experience, in an unexpected place, the gift of kindness by which people persons can identify with and provide one another.
It was this insightful and troubling comparison that ignited our inquisitiveness to investigate the societal influences within American society today, which feeds an anti-humanitarian culture.
These social influences are omnipresent, and individually, and at times in combination, present psychological barriers, which prevent many thoughtful people from becoming true people persons.
