Why Most Goals Fail and How the ALIGN Method Can Fix Them

“In preparing for battle, I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.” – Dwight D. Eisenhower

As we approach the end of the year, the natural urge to set goals kicks in. Reflecting on what we’ve accomplished (or haven’t) seems inevitable, but let’s face it—most goals fail.

Statistically, 80-90% of New Year’s resolutions fall apart before February, leaving many frustrated, overwhelmed, and feeling like goal-setting is just another futile exercise. But why does this happen? Because traditional goal-setting methods are fundamentally broken.

The Problem with Traditional Goal-Setting

Goals like “get in shape,” “make more money,” or “spend more time with family” sound great, but they rarely produce results. Here’s why:

  • They Lack Clarity: Vague goals don’t inspire action or provide direction.
  • They Rely on Motivation: Motivation is fleeting. When discipline and systems are absent, burnout is inevitable.
  • They Ignore Identity: Goals that don’t align with who you want to become don’t stick. (Shoutout to James Clear for teaching us this in Atomic Habits).
  • They Lack Systems: Goals without action plans are just wishes. Systems turn those wishes into reality.
  • They Skip Reflection: You can’t grow without evaluating what’s working, what’s not, and where you need to focus.

A Better Approach: Start with Reflection

Before you set goals, you need to clear the mental clutter and make space for progress. Reflection is the first step. I recommend using these two foundational tools:

1. Stop/Start/Continue Framework

  • STOP: Eliminate habits, activities, or commitments that drain your energy and hold you back.
  • START: Introduce new, purposeful actions that create momentum and align with your goals.
  • CONTINUE: Identify what’s already working and double down.

2. Life Audit Take a look at the key areas of your life:

  • Health, Wealth, Relationships, Growth, Faith, and Fun. Assess where you are right now versus where you want to be. This clears the noise and highlights the areas that matter most.

3. The Role of Standards: Your Baseline for Success

Before you set goals, it’s critical to evaluate your standards—the minimum baseline you’re willing to accept for yourself in every area of life. Your standards dictate your outcomes, not your intentions.

As we’ve discussed before, your standards are reflected in your daily actions, habits, and mindset. If you’re consistently falling short, the issue isn’t the goal—it’s the standard you’re holding yourself to.

  • Goals are aspirational: They’re where you want to go.
  • Standards are foundational: They’re the level you refuse to drop below.

Tony Robbins said it best: “We don’t rise to the level of our goals, we fall to the level of our standards.”

Raise Your Standards Before You Set Goals

The Life Audit clears the path, but setting non-negotiable standards ensures you stay on it:

  1. Health: What’s the minimum you will accept for your physical and mental well-being? (e.g., daily movement, sleep, nutrition).
  2. Wealth: Are you holding yourself to a standard of disciplined spending, saving, and investing?
  3. Relationships: Are you prioritizing meaningful connections, communication, and time with those who matter?
  4. Growth: Are you actively challenging yourself to learn, improve, and push your limits?
  5. Faith and Values: Are your actions aligned with your beliefs and principles?
  6. Fun: Are you making space for joy and experiences that recharge you?

When you raise your standards, your actions naturally elevate, and your goals become a byproduct of who you are, not just what you want.

The ALIGN Method is not just about achieving more; it’s about becoming the person who can sustain success. That starts with refusing to accept anything less than your best.

Standards + Systems = Results

  • Reflection (Life Audit) shows you where you are now.
  • Standards set the foundation for what you’re willing to accept.
  • Systems ensure you take consistent action to build a life aligned with your vision.

When your goals are tied to your identity, driven by your standards, and supported by systems, you stop chasing results and start creating them.

The ALIGN Method: Goals that Actually Work

Once you’ve reflected, it’s time to build a system that ensures your goals are actionable, sustainable, and tied to your identity.

The ALIGN Method does exactly that:

  1. Audit and Align: Start with reflection—where are you now? Align your goals with your values and priorities.
  2. Leverage Your Vision: Set bold goals tied to who you want to become, not just what you want to achieve.
  3. Implement Systems: Break goals into 12-week sprints with daily habits that create measurable progress.
  4. Grow with Grit: Build resilience to push through setbacks and challenges. Progress isn’t linear—it’s earned.
  5. Neuroscience-Driven Progress: Celebrate small wins. Science shows that recognizing progress releases dopamine, builds motivation, and sustains momentum.

Why the ALIGN Method Works

Traditional goals set you up for disappointment because they focus solely on outcomes. The ALIGN Method is different:

  • It’s reflective: You start by looking back and learning.
  • It’s identity-driven: Who you are shapes what you do.
  • It’s systems-focused: Small, consistent habits lead to big results.
  • It’s adaptable: Quarterly adjustments ensure you stay on track, no matter the setbacks.

The ALIGN Method works because it raises your standards. It transforms goal-setting into a process of alignment, action, and consistency.

What’s Next? Let’s Make 2024 Count

If you want 2024 to be different, you need to plan differently:

  1. Reflect: Use the Stop/Start/Continue framework and perform a Life Audit.
  2. Align: Set bold, identity-driven goals tied to your vision and values.
  3. Implement: Build systems, not wishes. Focus on daily actions that create long-term results.

Remember, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” – Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Your Turn: What Are You Stopping, Starting, or Continuing?

As the year wraps up, I’d love to hear from you:

  • What’s working?
  • What do you plan to eliminate?
  • What new actions will you take?

Drop your thoughts in the comments, and let’s inspire each other to make 2024 a year of ALIGNment, growth, and success.

As I make my 2025 goals (Which should have been completed by this point 🙃), I'm looking at 3 things: 1. Why do I want to accomplish the goal? 2. What am I willing to sacrifice/give up for the goal? 3. How will failing the goal negatively impact my life? You inspired the first two. In the past I made goals but didn't have a compelling reason on the reason.
