Rawlplug’s wall plugs: Humble beginnings

Our wall plugs have come a long way from their humble beginnings.

In 1910, John Joseph Rawlings invented the world’s first-ever wall plug, made of jute fibres and bonded with glue or animal blood. It was initially invented for refurbishment works at The British Museum. 

In 2005 we invented the UNO® Universal Plug, a truly universal plug which fixes into any base material, solid or hollow. The UNO® Universal Plug is made from Polypropylene and offers 100% reliability of fixing, thanks to its unique design. 

Then over 100 years since we invented the first wall plug, in 2019 e applied our innovation and designed a universal application plug built entirely of eco-friendly materials, known as the TimberUNO® Plug (more on that later).

What type of UNO® Universal Plugs are there?

The UNO® Universal Plug is perfect for everyone. However, no one size fits all for every project, so we have a range of different-sized UNO® Universal Plugs, including the 5mm, 6mm, 7mm 8mm and 10mm.

Each size has a maximum permissible load capacity for specific base materials (detailed below), so you can always have the most reliable fixing for your project.

What is the UNO® Universal Plug used for, and how does it work?
