Why use an eDiscovery recruiter anyway?

The best place to start is the discussions with my clients & network on a frequent basis on where recruiters have fallen down for them. Sadly the general consensus; salaries are too high with no justifiable reason why, keyword searching but not knowing what they mean e.g. technologies, EDRM and the difference between digital forensics and eDiscovery. Finally CV sending without a candidate’s permission which in the age of GDPR breach fines, baffles me as to why anyone would take that risk, it really isn’t worth it.

However there are a select few of us within niche areas (such as eDiscovery) that truly commit to our markets, so please don’t give up hope!

What is needed to demonstrate a good recruiter in eDiscovery?

Networking efficiently, showcasing integrity, instilling confidentiality and a constant investment into the wider legal technology & digital forensic world both through knowledge and action. Most of my placements have come from recommendations by individuals who trust that their friends, colleagues or at times, family/significant other is in the right hands.

The rest of the success comes from reading books, watching the #relativitycommunity videos & website updates, following blogs and asking everyone I come across about the technology and what they think are market trends and falls.

But it’s no hidden fact that the key metric is delivering on promises and filling those gaps in a business, and being honest on the successes and potential improvement areas to ensure the smoothest processes both present and within the future. This is what continues to build confidence, transparency and collaborative working relationships.

How did I start in the industry and get to where I am now?

It started this year with the release of my document ‘eDiscovery Recruitment Trends #1’ shared among some industry Partners, Directors, Head Of’s & ‘eDiscovery Thought Leaders’ - achieved via a couple of recruitment campaigns across all levels and compiling that data into a simple view for all technical and non-technical individuals. Also sending anonymised profiles (with permission) to businesses, specific to their needs.

Following this I visited Relativity Fest London to learn about the technology & people driving our world of discovery. Seeing Andrew Sieja introduce a partnership with Cellebrite and understanding why this was a big deal alongside other industry leading technologies. Still jealous not to have gone to Chicago though!

Finally through the more senior recruitment campaigns, exploring new areas such as Forensic Accounting & Forensic Data Analytics, the clients I’ve worked with have supported my knowledge expanding into something greater and more inclusive. Therefore introducing my skill set in 2020 to be encompassing a complete (Digital) Forensic Services & Accounting recruiter.

This lead to a more developed and recent edition of ‘eDiscovery & Forensic Technology Recruitment Trends #2’ guided by the passions, technological developments and commercial requirements of our ever evolving industry. P.S If you would like a copy, please do reach out, it’s free.

So what’s next?

2020 is going to be a great year with active projects across eDiscovery & Digital Forensic services already in play despite Brexit uncertainty spanning across Associates all the way to Directors.

My two biggest goals personally; to attend Relativity Fest London 2020 and as a forward New Year’s resolution to complete an ACEDS course to solidify an educated understanding of the eDiscovery world whilst also giving some more credibility (hopefully) that I’m not just another recruiter with big talk. Any support and guidance would be welcomed.

What happened in 2019?

I’m fortunate to have had a good year in 2019 as a recruiter in the unclear times of Brexit, working with multiple clients spanning across big 4 consultancies, tier 1 banks, boutique businesses, magic circle law firms, advisory firms and more across the EMEA region.

This has been forged by a strong network of individuals who have assisted me in educating myself on the eDiscovery world and then further into Digital Forensic services as a whole. To these individuals, to which you know who you are, you have solidified my passion for this market and a commitment to continue this hopefully for a long time into the future.

If you have any questions, comments or feedback, I would warmly welcome this.

I wish you all a wonderful festive period across the world and look forward to a fruitful and positive new year.
