Why you remain stuck in a career you don't like instead of pursuing your dream.
Why do we feel blocked or stay stuck when it comes to start creating the career and life we really want? How did it happen that so many people became hopeless and dissatisfied with what they do for a living? And why do we keep continuing on the same road instead of changing it?
Even if many factors come into play here, based on feedback I’ve received from hundreds of professionals I have been working with, I’ve observed the following reasons why people remain stuck in a career they don't like.
You don’t know yourself deeply enough
One of the main reasons is that the vast majority of people in the workplace don’t know themselves at all. When I ask my clients, “What’s your top priority in life and in your career?” or “When you’re in your 90s looking back, what do you want to have done, been, and left behind? " I mostly get blank stares. People don’t know themselves well and deeply today. Why? Perhaps we don’t make time in our lives to get to know ourselves better?
You have no idea of how many top managers and directors I meet that lack self-awareness, that are not aware of their true potential, skillset or what’s holding them back, which prevents them from increasing their confidence, courage and success in their careers.
You know yourself, but you suppress your feelings
You may know yourself, your values or what you want, but you just feel you have to suppress your feelings. You keep telling yourself, “Yeah, I am not happy with my job and I want to change, but It is not the right time. I should not complain about it, instead I should feel lucky to have a job.”
We tend to suppress our desires and wishes, but this is the worst thing you can do to yourself! If you don’t listen to your inner feelings, you will never find peace or joy.
You’ve lost courage to take action
The other reason might be that you’ve lost courage to act as we have been told that life should always be easy. Where did we get that idea? Making a life and career change isn’t easy, but it’s so worth it, when it's done in a proper way, especially if you are unhappy, unmotivated or just stressed with where you are today! Change! What’s the worst that can happen?
You feel you are not ready financially
In addition, money might be keeping you stuck in a career that makes you miserable, because you think it’s the only way you can earn money? Then it’s time to think about how much money you truly want to earn and if your current lifestyle is so fulfilling that you’d trade it over your health, family, happiness, relationships, and what you could have instead? Maybe you should start to invest in your second career that you have been dreaming of while you have a job?

You’ve been brainwashed by the myth that you don't need to love your work
One of the myths I am tired of hearing is that “I would really want to do something else that I am more passionate about, but…” Work is not supposed to be unsatisfying or something that you dislike. We all have people around us who love their work and generally this is what we say about them “Yeah, she is doing what she loves to do, because she is lucky, she is born in it or she inherited money, etc.” And “I can’t do the same because I don’t have money, or I am not lucky, I don’t have what she has, etc.” We always find excuses. This is how we want to see things, it is related to our perspective. If you really want to thrive, you don’t give yourself thousands of reasons why you cannot do it. Instead you just act to make things happen! You start.
You’ve been forgotten what happiness feels like
Finally, the most depressing reason of all is that you’ve simply forgotten what it feels like to be happy and joyful in your work. You can’t even remember the last time you enjoyed it or felt, “I love my job”. In the end we start to believe that myth - you can’t love your job and work is just a tool to make money!
Many people jump into the first job early in their career and only discover 10 or 20 years later that the road they have chosen it’s not theirs, but maybe someone else's. They think it is too late to restart and back into a tight, dark corner as they cannot see a way out. That’s the biggest mistake people make in their career!
The good news?
There is always a way out! No matter what, anyone can find a career more fulfilling and make their life better, only if you believe it's possible and it is worth a try.
You can overcome all these reasons by using the right strategies, by gaining clarity, and by getting the right direction on how to start, to really make a change this time.
