Why you should consider a career in property

Why you should consider a career in property

The property industry is one of Australia’s most valuable and important industries, with some estimates placing the nation’s combined housing value at $10 trillion. Australia has one of the most competitive property markets in the world with educated buyers and savvy investors continuing to drive demand. However, this strong competition from buyers has made it significantly more difficult for first home buyers to break into the crowded market and get their foot on the property ladder. This is where property experts and real estate professionals can help. Everyone working in the property space including the real estate agents, lawyers and conveyancers, and even the marketing team, have one shared goal. To help buyers navigate one of the most important purchases of their lives.

Given the personal and professional benefits associated with a career in the property sphere, it’s no wonder that more and more people are looking to make a career change. A prospective career in property is more than just a job, but rather a place to also grow and develop your personal knowledge related to the property sector. Over time, you will acquire the industry skills and knowledge required to support you, as well as friends and family in their respective journeys towards property acquisitions and investments.

I spoke with some team members at St Trinity to find out what they love about working in property and why they joined the team.

It is rewarding on many levels

Working in property involves supporting people through what is often one of the most important and challenging moments in their lives. For many people, buying a property can be a very emotional process. Accompanying individuals on this journey and making sure that their property purchase is as stress-free as possible, is extremely rewarding. As any good real-estate agent will know, the ‘trick’ to making a buyer happy does not lie solely in the final purchase price. Instead, agents must rely on their ability to uncover subtle clues from their ongoing communications with clients to identify what will truly make them happy. For example, a wife may only be satisfied if the property lives up to her idea of ‘her dream home’, while her husband may be satisfied if it means he could have an easy commute to work. A real estate agent must understand what it takes to satisfy each client and tailor their services accordingly. Agents who are able to develop this awareness and understand buyers’ motivations, find the real estate sector both exciting and joyful.

It can create a path towards financial freedom

Working in property allows you to learn the ins and outs of the industry first-hand. With a bit of elbow grease, you can very quickly develop knowledge and experience of market trends, minimum requirements to purchase a property, grants and incentives, tax depreciation related to investment properties, rental yields and much more. This knowledge, in tandem with the connections you’ll form in the industry, will arm you with the tools necessary to start your foray into property investing, allowing you to create the preconditions for long-term financial freedom.

One industry with endless career opportunities

When I tell people that I work in the property industry, they generally assume that I work as a real estate agent. However, the property industry is so much more diverse than just selling houses. When you dig a little deeper, you’ll soon discover a whole network of career paths and opportunities such as lawyers, marketing teams, operations, support, finance, advisors, HR, talent and many more! If you’re nimble and willing to learn, the property sector provides endless opportunities to pivot at a moment's notice.

At St Trinity, our teams work extremely close to one another and everyone has the opportunity to engage with other departments on a daily basis. This uniquely positions our team to have a holistic understanding of the entire property ecosystem.

The industry is constantly evolving

Ask any office worker to reflect on their job, and you’ll often hear the word ‘boredom’ bandied about. Whilst this is common in many settings, it’s certainly not the case in the property industry. The nature of the property sector is one of dynamism, evolution, and adaptability. This ensures that no two days are ever the same. Some consistent changes that keep us on our toes include demographic shifts, technology advancements, and even government regulations. For example, when looking back to early last century, urbanisation was slow, and most people lived in modest homes in the outskirts of the city. However, as immigration and rural-urban migration has increased, so too has housing density and a shift towards city-living. This shift has driven up demand in property prices across the board, thereby creating new challenges and opportunities for industry professionals.

Irrespective of your education or professional background, the property sector offers a multitude of opportunities. If you’re looking to revitalise your career and to move into a job that will propel you onwards on upwards, a role in the property industry may be your next step.
