Why Your CGM Might Mislead You

Why Your CGM Might Mislead You

Ever noticed your CGM (continuous glucose monitor) readings spike after a hot shower or sauna session? Don't panic! This doesn't necessarily mean your blood sugar is going haywire. Let's get into the science behind this phenomenon and how to interpret your CGM data accurately.

First, CGMs aren't designed for extreme temperatures. The heat can cause temporary sensor malfunctions, leading to inaccurate readings. So, a spike after a sauna might not reflect your actual blood sugar.

The more likely culprit? Your body's natural response to heat – sweating. This fluid loss leads to a temporary state of dehydration, or hemoconcentration, where your blood sugar appears higher due to a decreased volume of water in your bloodstream. This is especially important for those with pre-existing blood sugar concerns.

The temporary rise in blood sugar is just that – temporary. Your body is a self-regulating machine, and your blood sugar will return to normal once you cool down and rehydrate.

Biohacking Tips and Need to Knows:

Your CGM sensor is not really made to be in extreme temps and can become damaged. So if doing sauna, hot yoga, or steam rooms is something you can't go without you may have to swap out your sensor post hot worx session

  • Hydrate before: Drink plenty of water before your session to minimize dehydration, or regularly get IV hydration to stay ahead of potential dehydration.
  • Monitor Strategically: Consider taking your CGM reading after you've cooled down and rehydrated for a more accurate picture.
  • Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how you feel. If you experience excessive thirst, dizziness, or fatigue after a your session, adjust your routine accordingly.

Remember, CGMs are a valuable tool, but they don't always tell the whole story. By understanding the potential for heat-related fluctuations, you can biohack your experience for optimal results.
