Window Cleaning Technicians in the Cold: Heroes of the High Rises
Winter has officially arrived, and the temperature in New Jersey and New York continues to drop. While most of us stay warm and cozy indoors, window cleaning technicians are still out there, working hard to keep our buildings looking their best. With temperatures ranging from 30°F to 35°F, these professionals don’t let the cold stop them, no matter how challenging the conditions may be.
In today’s article, we bring you the reality of a window cleaner’s daily life during the cold season.
Freezing Water
One of the biggest challenges of winter window cleaning, as you might imagine, is the water. Water freezes quickly when temperatures drop, and frozen water in tools and buckets can make the job nearly impossible. To combat this, window cleaners rely on antifreeze solutions. "We have to use antifreeze, a product we add to the water so it doesn’t freeze," one window cleaner explained.
Usually, we use methanol, as it’s a more effective antifreeze for extreme temperatures, helping to lower the freezing point of water. However, the ratio of water to methanol has to be just right for it to work effectively. Our team also makes sure to protect their hands from the cold with waterproof fleece-lined gloves, keeping their hands warm and dry during those long hours outside. It’s all about using the right tools and techniques to get the job done.
Proper Clothing & Gear
But it’s not just the water that’s a challenge. The layers of clothing needed to protect against the cold also impact mobility. While they’re necessary for warmth, they do reduce movement and make it harder to work as quickly and efficiently.

Harsh Weather
And let’s not forget about those windy, cloudy days! On a sunny day, window cleaning in the winter can be tough, but manageable. When the wind picks up or the sky turns overcast, the cold feels even harsher, making the job even harder. Despite this, the team remains focused and adapts quickly, helping each other to finish the job as planned.
Even though the cold and wind slow things down, our window cleaning technicians at Thompson Exterior rise to the challenge! They adapt, find ways to stay warm, and stay focused on the task at hand. The goal is always to get the job done efficiently—and safely—while ensuring that every window is spotless.
We don't always notice the clean windows around us, but their impact is huge. These professionals make sure that, even in the winter, the world outside looks clear and bright. It’s a job that takes strength and focus.
So, the next time you’re walking past a building with sparkling windows, take a moment to think about the people who made that possible. Their dedication is something we should all appreciate more. Their work isn’t just tough—it’s a skillful balancing act that requires adaptability, physical endurance, and mental focus.
So that’s why we say, 'They are heroes!' Because they excel at what they do, no matter the challenges in their way—and they make it look effortless.
