Women Consultants, What Is Stopping You From Taking That Next Step?

Women Consultants, What Is Stopping You From Taking That Next Step?

Welcome to the latest edition of the Seven Figure Consultant LinkedIn Newsletter for Women in Consulting. Don't forget that you can get daily updates from Jessica in your LinkedIn news feed by accessing her LinkedIn profile and hitting Follow. She will be sharing insights and discussions through the week that she would love to hear your views on.

There is nothing so comforting as a good idea that you haven’t set about validating yet. You feel happy and confident because you have an amazing plan which is going to change your whole world.

You’ve thought it through, mapped it out, and you know what you need to do. The future looks bright and you start dreaming of how you will celebrate.

But then the mindset monkeys kick in… You wonder, what if this amazing idea bombs? What if everyone hates it? Or worse, what if testing it by the light of day shows it actually wasn’t a great idea, it was a mediocre one that will almost work but not deliver what I want it to?

Say you dream of working with a particular organisation and the first step is to build a relationship with the key decision maker in the area of the business that you’re looking to work in. Or maybe if you’re already leveraging your network, so you know you need to reach out and ask someone you already know to introduce you to this person.

In both cases, instead of doing the thing that will get the result, you then find a ton of rational sounding reasons to avoid making the call.

It works the same if you’re planning to send a really strategic email. You think, better not send on Monday, they’ll think I’m too keen or be so busy they won’t see it. I’m a bit busy on Tuesday. Does anyone pay attention to anything on a Wednesday? I’ve sort of missed the boat now but I could go with Thursday. Oh wait, now it’s Friday, no point as they’ll be gearing up for the weekend.

And this repeats for quite a few weeks before you get over yourself and send the damn thing.

Maybe there’s a difficult conversation you need to have. Perhaps you have to fire a client or fire a supplier, or address something uncomfortable without actually firing them.

You might decide you’re going to switch up your offering or raise your prices, but then every time you get on a call you end up going back to the old price or the old offer.

Does any of that sound familiar to you?

As entrepreneurs we can love having the security of a good idea, because we feel like we know where we’re going when we have an unactioned plan, and if we start doing the plan and then realise it isn’t as good as we need it to be, we will end up back at square one with nothing.

So I want to ask you a question I ask the women I work with when we have conversations about this: what are you getting out of NOT taking this step?

What are you getting out of not picking up the phone, or sending the email, or saying your new price?

If you know that you’re ready to work with a coach like me, head to my website, fill out the application form and a member of my team will be in touch right away to book you in for a discovery call with me.

Let me know in the comments, have you ever put something off because it seemed big and scary and then when you finally did it, it was quick and easy?
