Women in Tech 2019, Brisbane

What a great buzz at the Women in Tech conference 2019 in sunny Brisbane over the last few days. The energy, empowerment and supportive vibe was infectious. Certainly plenty of learnings that @Emma Pilcher, @Caroline Benson and I are going to take back to @Planit and share with the rest of our staff.

Over the next few weeks I would like to share some of the key takeouts for me, too many to go into one post (I filled three pads with notes - wish I knew how to do shorthand!).

75% of jobs in the future are going to need maths and science. This is not historically subjects that girls continue and if they are not hooked by the ages of 9-13 years, then they are lost to these subjects. One of the ways, and there were many, suggested at the conference was through discussions on space (another hot topic). Did you know that Australian companies are involved in the Artemis Programme due 2024?

The top 5 skills that are needed in the future are:

  1. Creativity
  2. Persuasion
  3. Collaboration
  4. Adaptability
  5. Time Management

If these are not in your skills kit bag, find a mentor to help you and put them into your development plan.

We need more diversity of thought and we can only get these by being inclusive of everyone. Look around you, is there a great mix of people at your next meeting, event, conference or social, if there isn't do something about it!
