Women Transform Tech #2: The best way to solve Europe’s talent shortage, best practices from our Head of Public Policy, and four events not to be miss
Welcome to the second edition of Women Transform Tech - a newsletter coming out on each last Wednesday of the month, dedicated to every woman in the tech industry. Here you get the latest insights and essential knowledge to drive your career and contribution towards a more inclusive, innovative, and sustainable future in technology.
Our mission is to provide women in tech with the tools, resources, and inspiration they need to succeed in a rapidly changing industry, while promoting diversity, equity, and sustainability within the Netherlands' tech ecosystem.
Let’s get started! ☕️
Tech O’Clock
Women in tech: The best bet to solve Europe’s talent shortage
Women occupy only 22% of tech positions across Europe. And Europe faces a potential tech talent shortfall of up to 3.9 million by 2027 - so addressing this gender gap is crucial not only for equity, but also for economic growth. Increasing women's participation in tech to 45% could close this talent shortfall, potentially boosting GDP by €260 billion to €600 billion. Key strategies include reducing biases, improving retention, reskilling women, and encouraging STEM education early on.
Wait, this sounds familiar! This is exactly what we’re doing at Women in Tech®Netherlands . For companies, it doesn’t have to be NASA-materials - just become our partner and leverage workshops on diversity and inclusion straight from our team. Contact Mariska Kleiss .
Only 6 women among top 100 young Dutch self-made millionaires
Oh, another article that underscores the ongoing gender disparity in wealth accumulation...
Men are still very overrepresented on the Quote Top 100 Young Self-made Millionaires ranking. Only six women made it to the top 100 list of young Dutch self-made millionaires in 2024, a slight increase from previous years. Many of these young millionaires, including the women on the list, have amassed their wealth through advancements and opportunities in artificial intelligence.
Sharon Hilgers (34) is the richest woman on the list, coming in 37th place. She is the founder of the jewelry brand My Jewelery. Loes Daniels (35), founder of Experiencegift, returned to the top 100 this year after several difficult years in the coronavirus pandemic. Bibi Lemmers (28) is new to the list this year. Her company Flexhaus posts healthcare staff in Switzerland.
Online platform for all event professionals in the EU
Eleonora S. , one of our newest active members, recently started a tech project — an online platform for all event professionals in the EU. The platform aims to help event professionals promote their services so potential clients can find them all in one place. It's especially useful for organising events in different countries where you might not know a good venue, photographer, or speaker.
She’s looking now to build the MVP through funding, because what started as a small idea has grown significantly. Interested to find out more? Contact her directly on LinkedIn or send her an email at eleonora.sitovich@gmail.com.

Women Talk Tech
As CLO, Head of Public Policy and Governance Affairs and Board Member WOMEN IN TECH ® Global and Partnership Lead Women in Tech®Netherlands , Marisa Monteiro Borsboom🦋 has had the opportunity to engage with various aspects of the tech industry. Throughout her journey, she encountered numerous stereotypes and challenges that women face in this field - and today, she wants to address some of these misconceptions and share strategies for creating more inclusive workplaces, while also reflecting on the future of women in tech.
What's the craziest stereotype about women in tech that you've encountered, and how do you debunk it?
I found two that are interesting. The first is that women in tech aren’t only the technical jobs. Women in tech cover the women working in tech industry as a whole. The second is that women in tech are all introverted engineers. We know neither is true.
Can you share any strategies or best practices for Dutch tech companies to create more inclusive and supportive work environments for women?
I think we need more creativity regarding support infrastructures in companies. From paid training, so that women can invest in this area, especially the re-skill group, to a more flexible environment that accommodates motherhood, because women in The Netherlands struggle to have full time jobs while still being able to have families.
What's your go-to motivational quote or mantra when facing challenges in the tech industry?
It is not necessarily for women in tech, but could apply: “Some men see things as they are and ask, <<Why?>> I dream things that never were and ask, <<Why not?>>“- Robert F. Kennedy
Can you imagine a tech industry with women as the majority? What would it look like?
At the Women in Tech Summit in Paris last year, I said on stage regarding the Metaverse: “Can we imagine a world where women would rule? What would it look like?” Would amuse us, if nothing else. Guess we need more women in thinking (pure humorous irony here).
Imagining a tech industry where women are the majority it's a goal we should all strive towards. By debunking stereotypes and fostering inclusive environments, we pave the way for a diverse and innovative future.
Let's continue to ask "Why not?" and work towards a shared tech landscape.
Hey, you! 🧐 For sure you know a woman in tech who’d be perfect for this section of our newsletter - get us in touch with her and let’s make her famous.

#BeyondCeilings, a film campaign by WOMEN IN TECH ® Global and UN Women
From a young age, girls are taught that the sky has limits. From experiencing gender bias in school to being promoted more slowly than their male peers, women face the pervasive “glass ceiling” in many ways. Globally, women hold only 28.2% of management positions in the workplace. Of all CEOs of global Fortune 500 companies, 5.8% are female. Despite the progress made in recent decades, if the current pace of change continues, women’s share of leadership positions will reach only 30% by 2050.
WOMEN IN TECH ® Global, with the support of UN Women, have initiated a global campaign to highlight the continuing challenges of invisible yet significant barriers — commonly known as the "glass ceiling" — that hinder women in various fields, especially in STEM.
The campaign film debuted at the Women in Tech Global Summit 2024 in Paris.
