Work experience, a prerequisite for MBA aspirants?

Opinions are often divided on this question. The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) shared in late 2019 that more people under the age of 24 are enrolling for MBA degrees globally, reports India Today.

Tanya Bahl , LinkedIn Top Voice and a student of IIM-Lucknow, worked for 10 months before pursuing a master’s in business administration. She, however, says that work experience isn’t a prerequisite to pursue an MBA degree.”

That said, LinkedIn data shows that the average years of prior work experience for MBA students in India has increased from 0.8 years in 2018 to 1.3 years in 2022. This figure is higher across a few of the most hallowed B-schools, with IIM-Ahmedabad, IIM-Bangalore, and IIM-Calcutta clocking in at 4.8 years, 3.9 years, and 3.9 years, respectively. It is 4.6 years at the Indian School of Business.

How can work experience help?

Gracio Joyal Lobo , pursuing a professional MBA programme at the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, is a Materials, Process and Physics Engineer at Boeing. He says, “I had three years of work experience before starting my MBA programme. My problem-solving skills and current sector knowledge, which I developed while working, were helpful during my MBA application.”

Having work experience helps during an MBA interview since it is a talking point, says Bahl. One can weave in real-life examples about the impact they created in a corporate environment, she adds.

What are the professional skills that help one while studying for an MBA degree?

The GMAC says that interpersonal, decision-making, and leadership skills are essential for MBA students, reports Fortune.

The real-world experience one gains from working is invaluable for an MBA degree, Lobo says. “It enables one to develop foundational skills related to teamwork, collaboration, and communication,” he adds.

Methodology: The average years of work experience an MBA graduate has before commencing an MBA programme is determined for all graduates within a specific graduation year. To compute the college-specific years of work experience prior to an MBA, the average years of work experience is calculated using data from MBA cohorts who graduated between 2018 and 2022. It is assumed that MBA programmes begin in August each year, as the data does not provide the exact start month.

Work experience helps, certainly. Not many of us can digest the fact that the real world will not operate by our own notions and standards.

I believe that a few years of work experience before pursuing an MBA brings immense value to the learning outcomes. One, the students will be able to relate the course content to real life situations and knowledge building begins at a level higher compared to a point without industry perspectives. Second, they will be in a better position to absorb learning that comes from Peer-to-Peer exchanges and discussion boards. Finally, a few years in an industry environment will give candidates a better understanding of what stream (Finance/Marketing /HR) they are most passionate about. When they pick what they like, chances of successful careers are enhanced.
