Work from Home is killing Being Agile!

Work from Home is killing Being Agile!

Manifesto for Agile Software Development

Emphasis on

Individuals and interactions,
Working software,
Customer collaboration,
Responding to change
  • Business people and developers must work together daily throughout the project.
  • The most efficient and effective method of conveying information to and within a development team is face-to-face conversation.
  • The best architectures, requirements, and designs emerge from self-organizing teams.
  • At regular intervals, the team reflects on how to become more effective, then tunes and adjusts its behavior accordingly.
We can Maximize all these above points when we have collocated team members.

In his book People Analytics, MIT visiting scientist Ben Waber discusses the role of dependencies for programmers, that teams must coordinate closely to ensure their code meshes well. Citing others’ research as well as his own, Waber argues remote programmers are 8% less likely than co-located groups to communicate about dependencies, which translates to 32% longer code completion times–or death when you’re already as lumbering as Yahoo. “For Yahoo, then, this means their workforce becomes about 3% more effective with the stroke of a pen,” Waber wrote, the value of which he pegs at $150 million.

And innovation, according to the current prevailing thinking, happens when people work together in one place.
Face-to-face and on-site interaction helps drive innovation, brainstorming and collaboration.

In most of the agile ceremonies we are not getting full participants, team members are working from home. Through conference they join but lot of noise , poor connection, family talking at back!

Team members are logged on whole day !

Working with the TV on, playing with their kids at home, work for home!

“Collaborative efficiency”—the speed at which a group successfully solves a problem. And distance seems to drag collaborative efficiency down. Why? The short answer is that collaboration requires communication.Face to Face to communication maximize collaboration.

Best Team area where collaboration and productivity is very high.

Building Learning Organization:

Chapters are another way that Spotify promotes team collaboration and innovation. Chapters are a group or team members working within a special area.a chapter could be a ‘front office chapter’, where front office developers get together and exchange ideas, get help on challenges and discuss new technologies. .

A guild is a community of members with shared interests. These are a group of people across the organization who want to share knowledge, tools code and practices. Each guild has a co-coordinator, and such guilds include: web technology guild, test automation guild or even an agile coaching guild. There can also be guilds on such things as photography, design or any other common interest.

Most of the time team members cannot contribute to chapters or guild because they are working from home. Such of meeting is very effective when we have face to face meeting.

How can we ensure we can build learning organization where team members are not available for crucial initiatives.

I am for "work from office" , No work from home ! Work for home !

We should have high level of maturity and discipline to do WFH effectively. Re look at the working agreement of the team, how they can make WFH effectively.

Please come to office, we do daily scrum with physical board, We prefer face to face communication.

Not a killer but a challenge.. It needs to be discussed and agreed in the team.

What a bleak and old-fashioned view on working from home... I do hope that scrum doesn't mean a return to the nine-to-five time, where it was not possible to have some flexibility in working hours. Yes, F2F is best in certain situations, but that doesn't mean other ways of communicating are totally useless and counterproductive

Everything can be discussed... the main issue here is team member engagement... We have identified the issue is being an employee... regardless as long as you are not getting direct reward from the success, things will drag as the heart won't be there. People don't like scrum meetings (in general) because.... because.... come on... scrum... its a meeting!! (which scrums and agile encourage for less meetings)
