I blasted Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" at work in the middle of the night and screamed.

I have to say "maybe," but Japanese film critic Shigehiko Hasumi had this to say about news footage of the 9/11 attacks.

Everyone says, "It looks like a movie," but it is not even a proper "shot".

The word "shot" probably means something like the following if you look it up in a movie dictionary.

A continuous sequence of images shot by a single camera without interruption. It is the smallest unit of a film, but a scene, a sequence, or even a film can consist of a single shot. In Japan, the term "cut" is often used instead.

But the "shot" that Hasumi Shigehiko refers to means much more than that. It is not an easily explicable concept, as is the answer to the question, "What is cinema?"

But at least many people in Japan thought, "It looks like a movie" when they saw the news footage of the 9/11 attacks. That day, I went to the hospital to pick up my father, who was undergoing dialysis. In the car, he said, "It was just like in the movies".

Most people living in Japan today, including myself, have never actually seen a person killed or heard a gunshot. Japan is a very safe country. But we know how to kill people as well as people in other countries. We learned it from cinemas. That is why the Japanese people said, "It looks like a movie," when they saw a screen that was not a proper "shot". And today, cinemas still teach people how to kill people and how to fight wars.

This young man is a character in the second half of "The Holy Spirit in Ultramarine". There is not actually a sequence like this picture, but I created this picture to create a character correlation. He is a character I sculpted with reference to my time working for a general contractor. Thus, like me, he is the administrative head of the building department, and is kept busy until midnight, day after day, assessing invoices from subcontractors. He was a basketball player in school. And he is beginning to dream of becoming a sports photographer.

To be clear, the amount of paperwork I was carrying around at the time that I was unable to process was not of this magnitude; it was an extraordinary amount, surrounded on all sides by piles of documents. I had three desks, two computers, and three landline phones. I was in charge of accounting, sales, administration. I was also in charge of maintenance work, and once replaced more than 20 air conditioners. I was once put under house arrest by a YAKUZA/gang. Day after day, I worked until 3-4 am and then again at 8 am. Two and a half years after being transferred from the Public Works Department to the Building Department I broke down and resigned. I know that after I left, my job was assigned to several people. Now, the name of that company is on my profile, but I do not want to denounce it. This was in the early 2000's and I don't know what that company is doing now.

In short, I want to let you all know how grateful I am for that experience. Because if I had not experienced those days when I was so driven, I would not be writing screenplays now. I had a strong admiration for filmmakers. I admired Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Roberto Rossellini, and John Ford. I thought it was too awe-inspiring for me to step into that divine realm. But now I'm writing a screenplay because I think that maybe film can teach human harmony in the way it teaches murder.

I didn't read sports magazines in the middle of the night when I was sick of work. But I turned on the radio and turned it up to full volume. Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" was playing, and I shook my head violently from side to side and screamed. That miserable man is writing this now.
