Working out your career path!
Choosing the right path for your career

Working out your career path!

In life, we are regularly confronted with the need to make choices. I was recently asked to give some guidance on what to do when reflecting on future career choices.

My initial response was to suggest that you work out your WHY.  What is it that drives you to be your best.  Simon Sinek’s book “Find your Why” is a fantastic resource to get you started.  From there, understanding your personal Values becomes the next most important activity.

Both these set the bar for what you will be like as an individual and employee.  Once you have mastered these steps, you are in a position to consider the plan for you to reach your employment goal. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you consider your career direction, starting with defining your goal:

1. Define Your Career Goal

  • Identify Your Interests: Reflect on what you enjoy doing, both professionally and personally. Self-Reflection: Spend time thinking about what activities and subjects you are passionate about. Consider hobbies, past jobs, and volunteer experiences. Interest Assessments: Use tools like the Holland Code (RIASEC) or the Strong Interest Inventory to identify your interests.

  • Assess Your Strengths and Skills: Consider what you are good at and what skills you have developed. Skill Inventory: List your skills, both hard (technical) and soft (interpersonal). Include skills gained from work, education, and personal experiences. Feedback: Ask colleagues, friends, and mentors for feedback on your strengths.

  • Set Clear Objectives: Define what you want to achieve in your career. This could be a specific job title, industry, or a type of work environment. SMART Goals: Ensure your career goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Vision Board: Create a visual representation of your career aspirations to keep you motivated.

2. Research Potential Careers

  • Explore Different Fields: Look into various industries and roles that align with your interests and skills. Online Research: Use websites like O*NET, LinkedIn, and industry-specific job boards to explore various careers. Career Fairs: Attend career fairs and industry conferences to learn about different roles and companies.

  • Job Market Trends: Research the demand for different careers and future job market trends. Labor Market Information: Look at reports from government agencies or industry associations to understand job demand and growth areas. Future Trends: Read articles and reports on emerging trends and technologies in your field of interest.

  • Informational Interviews: Talk to professionals in fields you are interested in to gain insights and advice. Reach Out: Contact professionals through LinkedIn or your network to request informational interviews. Prepare Questions: Ask about their career path, daily responsibilities, required skills, and industry insights.

3. Evaluate Your Options

  • Pros and Cons: List the advantages and disadvantages of each potential career path. Comparison Chart: Create a chart to compare the benefits and drawbacks of each career option. Consider Lifestyle: Think about how each career aligns with your desired lifestyle, including work-life balance, location, and salary.

  • Alignment with Goals: Consider how each option aligns with your long-term career goals and personal values. Values Assessment: Ensure the career aligns with your personal values and long-term goals. Career Fit: Consider if the career will provide fulfillment and satisfaction.

  • Feasibility: Assess the practicality of each option, including required education, training, and potential barriers. Education and Training: Research the education and certifications required for each career. Barriers: Identify potential obstacles, such as relocation or financial constraints, and plan how to overcome them.

4. Develop a Plan

  • Set Short-Term Goals: Break down your long-term career goal into smaller, manageable steps. Milestones: Break down your long-term goal into smaller, achievable milestones. Timeline: Create a timeline for achieving each milestone.

  • Acquire Necessary Skills: Identify any additional skills or qualifications you need and plan how to acquire them. Education: Enroll in courses, workshops, or degree programs to gain required knowledge. Certifications: Obtain relevant certifications that are valued in your chosen field.

  • Gain Experience: Look for internships, volunteer opportunities, or part-time jobs in your field of interest. Internships: Apply for internships to gain hands-on experience. Volunteer Work: Volunteer in roles related to your career interest to build skills and network.

5. Take Action

  • Update Your Resume and LinkedIn: Tailor your resume and LinkedIn profile to reflect your career goals and relevant skills. Tailor Your Resume: Customize your resume to highlight relevant skills and experiences for each job application. LinkedIn Profile: Ensure your LinkedIn profile is complete, professional, and reflects your career goals.

  • Network: Connect with professionals in your desired field through networking events, social media, and professional organizations. Professional Associations: Join industry-specific associations and attend their events. Networking Events: Participate in networking events, both online and in-person, to meet professionals in your field.

  • Apply for Jobs: Start applying for positions that align with your career plan. Job Boards: Use job boards like Indeed, Glassdoor, and company websites to find job openings. Follow Up: After applying, follow up with a polite email to express your continued interest.

6. Reflect and Adjust

  • Regularly Review Your Progress: Periodically assess your progress towards your career goals. Self-Assessment: Periodically review your progress and adjust your plan as needed. Journaling: Keep a career journal to track your achievements and challenges.

  • Be Open to Change: Be flexible and open to adjusting your plan as you gain more experience and insights. Flexibility: Be willing to pivot if you discover new interests or opportunities. Continuous Learning: Stay open to learning new skills and adapting to changes in your field.

  • Seek Feedback: Continuously seek feedback from mentors, peers, and professionals to improve and stay on track. Mentorship: Seek out mentors who can provide guidance and feedback. Peer Feedback: Regularly ask for feedback from colleagues and peers to improve your performance.

Remember, career planning is an ongoing process, and it's okay to make changes along the way. Good luck with your career journey!
