Workplace Health and Fairness is Everyone's Responsibility
Workplace Restoration and Workplace Health and Fairness are responsibilities for everyone in the workplace. Some have commented that restoring the workplace and managing conflict in the workplace is a "management" responsibility. I completely agree. But it does not stop there. For there to be healthy workplaces, everyone must be allowed and encouraged to accept responsibility for doing their part. Here is how different roles in the workplace can participate:
Senior Executives:
- by setting the right tone
- by modelling the right behaviour
- by devoting sufficient resources to manage psychological and physical health of employees
- by encouraging others
- by encouraging, accepting and considering constructive criticisms
- by placing employee health at a high priority in their workplace
- by commissioning research into their workplaces so that they understand the real state of employee health
Mid Level Managers
- by taking employee health seriously
- by offering constructive feedback to their superiors, colleagues and subordinates
- by modeling positive behaviour
- by listening and acting upon concerns
- by sharing their responsibility to manage conflict with the rest of their team including human resources and union representatives
Human Resources
- by learning about how conflict works and how it can be best managed
- by becoming aware of psychological health and safety and finding ways to assess workplaces for psychological health
- by working together with managers, leaders, union representatives and other support functions to build a team around workplace health
- by encouraging their leadership to devote the resources necessary ensure good employee health
Finance and Budgeting
- by making workplace health a priority in the budget
- by researching and understanding the costs of unhealthy workplaces and responsibly budgeting for processes that will improve workplace health
Union Representatives
- by making workplace health a priority in collective bargaining
- by encouraging their employer to work with them to implement the psychological health and safety standard
- by encouraging their organization to review process aimed at managing conflict to ensure they conform with best practices
- by actively participating in workplace assessments and reviews and encouraging their members to likewise participate
- by playing a central role in workplace conflict management and workplace restoration and by encouraging their membership to actively participate in the movement of workplace culture toward one of fairness
Occupational Health and Safety Representatives
- by embracing the role of OSH in contributing to workplace health by assessing risks of psychological harm and taking appropriate safety measure to minimize those risks

5yExactly this! "placing employee health at a high priority in their workplace". Social services is totally over loaded. It has to be prioritized within workplaces. Instead of consistently competing and increasing stress in workplaces everyone needs to be on the same page for community wellbeing
