Workplace Wildfires: Explode or Evolve?
by Asha Dullabh, Clinical Psychologist
In the dynamic environment of the workplace, we often strive for harmony, balance, and smooth operations. Yet, just as in nature, where a forest fire can lead to new growth, there are times when a controlled burst of combustible energy is exactly what's needed to ignite change, foster creativity, and renew a sense of purpose. This combustible energy—expressed through the metaphor of an explosion—can serve as a powerful catalyst for recreating, reinvesting, and starting afresh in the professional realm.
The Nature of Combustible Energy
Combustion, in its literal sense, is the process of burning something to release energy. This metaphor translates seamlessly to the workplace, where pent-up frustrations, unspoken ideas, and suppressed emotions can build up over time, creating a potential for an 'explosion.' Rather than viewing this explosion as something to be avoided at all costs, we can see it as a necessary and constructive force that has the potential to clear away stagnation and pave the way for new growth.
The Explosive Need for Expression
In many work environments, there's an unspoken rule that emotions should be kept in check and disagreements smoothed over quickly. While maintaining professionalism is important, suppressing feelings and ideas can lead to an environment where creativity is stifled, innovation is limited, and employee morale suffers.
An explosion, in this metaphorical sense, is the release of these built-up energies. It might take the form of a heated discussion, a passionate debate, or even a moment of collective frustration. This combustion of ideas and emotions can be a necessary catalyst for change, forcing individuals and teams to confront underlying issues and express what they truly need or desire.
Recreating and Reinvesting After the Explosion
Just as a controlled burn in nature allows for new growth, a burst of combustible energy in the workplace can lead to a process of recreation and reinvestment. After the explosion, there is often a period of reflection where individuals and teams can evaluate what led to the buildup of energy in the first place. This reflection is crucial; it allows for the identification of old patterns, practices, or beliefs that may no longer serve the team or organization.

Starting Afresh: Harnessing the Energy
Once the dust settles, the energy released from the explosion can be harnessed to fuel a fresh start. This is a critical phase where the raw energy is channeled into constructive action. It's about taking the passion, ideas, and emotions that have been unleashed and using them to drive innovation, inspire new projects, and create a more vibrant and dynamic workplace.
Steps to Harness Combustible Energy:
Embracing Combustible Energy for Growth
Combustible energy in the workplace is not something to be feared but rather something to be understood and harnessed. When approached with the right mindset, explosive moments can be transformative, leading to a more open, innovative, and resilient work environment. They offer an opportunity to clear away what no longer serves the team, recreate a culture that promotes growth, reinvest in relationships and goals, and renew the collective spirit of the organization.
In a world that often values harmony and order, it’s important to recognize the power of combustion. It's a force that, when managed and channeled effectively, can spark the kind of change and renewal that keeps workplaces dynamic, engaging, and poised for the future. So, the next time you sense an explosion brewing in your team, consider how this burst of energy might be the very thing you need to reignite and transform.

3moI really like the metaphorical expression of explosion to evolve better. It is a tricky tread and can be well managed if the leader/manager is aware of the pulse/vibe, like-mindedness, aspects that could trigger and trickle the conflict, is non-competing to safeguard themselves but is thinking of collectivism. Also, the timing of the explosion and the environment/culture is also crucial to be considered. All said, if done correctly it can lead to collective goal achievement with individual acknowledgment. A lot of times team meetings or MDT’s feel so as well but open, honest, well-timed, stimulating conversation helps in conflict resolution if any. Thank you Asha for bringing this sticky path into the limelight and using such powerful words to express it succinctly.

3moSometimes a workplace needs creativity and this can only be achieved through absolute honesty and a clash of opinions as to what is best for your business . This type of debate can only surface in an environment of trust and openness.
