World Health Day 23- A focus on Clinical Research

It’s World Health Day! This year the World Health Organization celebrates its 75th year anniversary. In 1948, countries of the world came together and founded the WHO to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable- so everyone, everywhere can attain the highest level of health and wellbeing. The theme for this year is on ‘Health for all’. Atlantia as a community abides by this ethos as we strive to improve human health for the greater good through human clinical research.

In this article a focus will be put on the beneficial work that Atlantia provides as an organization by joining together many key stakeholders within this realm.

Clinical Research’s Impact on society

Atlantia is a world-renowned contract research organization focused on helping companies and startups a like advance nutritional medicine and bring products to market. The company’s core mission since day 1 has been on striving to improve human health and wellbeing through nutrition research. From the onset of the company’s development, the core founders have had a shared mission. The work Atlantia does in driving clinical research further makes an enormous contribution to society. It is important to touch on the core meaning behind the work the company undertakes. Clinical research is defined as “the comprehensive study of the safety and effectiveness of the most promising advances in patient care”. The team enables scientific research by investigating and exploring how different ingredients are contributing to human health.

Shauna Cusack, Global Sales Manager adds “If we can research foods/supplements to replace medicine or work in conjuction with, that in my mind is groundbreaking research”.

A lot of the trials that the clinic performs are on generally healthy populations, such as diabetes, osteoarthritis abut in the more recent years we have carried out studies looking at pre-diessed and diseased popuation, such as diabetes, osteoarthrithis or atopic dermatitis. These trials will ensure that vital advances are being made to life altering diseases.

Andrea Doolan, Atlantia’s CEO believes that “If we can delay the onset of disease, it’s going to have a massive impact”.

A focus on disease prevention

As a spin out of APC Microbiome Ireland, Atlantia has been involved in pioneer research projects in the Microbiome arena. Diverse microbiome therapies are a hope to many patients with chronic conditions, such as IBS. Barry Skillington, CCO and cofounder touches on how he believes some of the most impactful areas tend to be around digestive health issues, IBS, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. It is a significant as globally it is estimated that 5-10% of the population has IBS. Drug regimes have various levels of success and so patients or subjects are always looking for alternatives. The hope at the end of each trial is that the key dietary supplement/ functional food ingredients eventually make it to market. Working in the clinical research field provides great insight and perspective for the Atlantia team.

Barry Skillington witnesses the full pipeline of the trial. “It’s so nice to see some of the subjects on the trials get relief from the products that we are trialing in our communities”.

Health promotion in the community

Promoting the work that the Atlantia community has underwent has always been a vital part of the company’s overall goal. Shauna Cusack, Global Sales Manager shares how “Atlantia has spent a great deal of time and money embedding itself into the local communities, where we do a lot of talks and expos, where we meet with the public letting them know of our ongoing research and keeping them up to date on the latest health trends”.

The recruitment team at Atlantia plays a critical role in advancing medical and nutritional knowledge through its efforts of scientific communication in the local communities of both Cork, Ireland and Chicago, USA. The team contributes to a varied mix of activities, including:

  • Open days
  • Health talks
  • Scientific blog posts
  • Webinars with scientific educators
  • Health promotion in local universities

Amongst these, Atlantia target cohorts of people from different age/ disease groups in the community, specific to different trials. For example, the events team at Atlantia have organized talks with the elderly community and have helped promote good nutrition and successful ageing. From the publications that are released around specific advances to pre diseased and diseased populations, Atlantia is the perfect communicator of these results.

Onthatile Serehete, Atlantia’s Medical Doctor shares how that “the diversity of in the trials we run is always something to look forward to as we participant in different trials targeting multiple therapeutic areas”.  This is a much neglected area in scientific community to research natural products and their impact on clinical health outcomes.

Substantiating your product

Through effective high quality clinical research companies in the functional food/ nutraceutical space have the possibility to drive their innovation forward through substantiating their product with a clinical trial or even series of studies to boost their clinical pipeline. Professor Timothy Dinan concludes on how “going forward, many of our clients with supplements wish to move to the high value end of the market, and we can enable them to achieve this goal”. R&D specialists in the dietary supplement and nutraceutical space are always trying to push the boundaries of science. Atlantia can conduct the studies because the team delivers on the science- the human clinical science at the very end of the development pipeline. Secure a meeting with our team today, to discuss your future clinical project needs!

To conclude, it is important to translate the message of the power of clinical trials.

Irene Cisma Dias, Atlantia’s Marketing Manager states how “We believe our contributions to the research field in this area is one of the greatest milestones we should feel proud of as a company”.

It’s important to highlight that this effort wouldn’t be possible without the various stakeholders within Atlantia, particularly the clinical trial participants who make the running of a clinical trial possible.
