World’s Longest Conveyor Belt System

A true engineering marvel, visible from space:

The world’s longest conveyor belt system, spans 61.3 miles across the Western Sahara. This massive structure carries an impressive 2,000 metric tons of rock per hour at a transport speed of about 4.5 meters/sec (about twice as fast as typical sorter conveyors in automated warehouses which are about 2-2.4 m/s).

Interesting Conveyor Belt Statistics:

  • Total length: 98,653.95 meters / 61.3 miles
  • Difference in altitude: 212.60 m
  • Number of sections: 11
  • Maximum length section: 11,649.17 m
  • Minimum length section: 6,769.60 m

In each section there is an inspection vehicle equipped with acoustic probes that allow the operation of the 113,000 rollers to be controlled and replaced without stopping the installation.

It deals with the harsh desert conditions through several engineering strategies:

  1. Design and Materials: The conveyor belt is constructed using durable materials resistant to sand abrasion, UV radiation, and extreme temperatures. Reinforced fabric and specialized rubber compounds ensure longevity in the harsh desert environment.
  2. Maintenance and Dust Control: Regular maintenance prevents wear and tear caused by sand and wind. Dust suppression systems minimize the impact of fine particles on the belt and machinery.
  3. Cooling and Insulation: The belt’s design includes cooling features to prevent overheating. Insulation shields sensitive components from extreme temperature fluctuations.
  4. Robust Structure: The conveyor’s robust structure withstands shifting sands, high winds, and occasional sandstorms. Proper tensioning and alignment prevent belt deviation.

Maintaining the world’s longest conveyor belt system, spanning 61 miles across the Western Sahara, presents unique challenges due to its extreme length and operational demands. Logistical hurdles include accessing remote locations and traversing varied terrain, from mountains to plains.

The harsh desert environment—extreme temperatures, sandstorms, and abrasive particles—puts strain on the system. Continuous operation, high speeds, and exposure to intense sunlight accelerate component wear. Dust and debris pose risks, requiring effective dust suppression systems. Proper tensioning, regular inspections, and predictive maintenance are crucial for structural integrity and preventing unexpected failures.

Wow. That's a ~6 hour journey for a payload at max speed! Good to know our Mobile Conveyor Inspection System has a battery life and video recording length can handle even that.
