1. William Shakespeare
Probably the one name that comes to everyone’s notice while speaking about legends of literature, William Shakespeare is often recognised as England’s national poet and his plays are performed across the world more often than any other playwright’s. His works consist of 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, 38 plays and many other verses. His works covered comedy, history, tragedy and romances. Anyone having the slightest inclination towards literature would know of him and his incredible plays such as Hamlet, The Tempest, Othello, Julius Caesar, The Merchant of Venice and many more. His famous poems include Rape of Lucrece and Venus and Adonis.
2. Robert Frost
We have all in our schools studied the poem The Road Not Taken- a beautiful composition by Robert Frost. One of the most distinguished and critically appreciated American poets of the twentieth century, Robert Frost is highly look upon for his representations of rural life and his expertise of American colloquial dialogue. He has received recognition worldwide for his contribution to literature and some of his honours include four Pulitzer prizes for poetry, the congressional gold medal in 1960, and was named poet Laureate of Vermont in 1961. He had also nominated for the Nobel prize in Literature 31 times.
