Write About Coronavirus, Social Justice, and More
Writing About Topics of Great Concern is Worthwhile
Often I am asked what to write about on your blog, in articles, and as a part of the short reports I recommend you publish on a regular basis. Current events will always be popular as topics and valuable to your body of work you are creating with your writing. If you write about coronavirus right now you will definitely be current with the times. Think about the topics you think about every day, do some research, and start writing.
When I began writing online in 2006 the current events and topics I focused on were around entrepreneurship and authorship. I kept up to date with my research and discovered that eBooks, Amazon, Google for business, and list building were of interest to my target audience. The idea of creating a book out of electrons was a fairly new concept at that time.
This topic became massively important as I was growing my business and I ended up creating my own eBooks to sell on my websites (this was several years before the Kindle device and Reader was invented), products, and courses around the business side of authorship and self-publishing. It would be two full years before I moved on with relationship marketing and widened my niche by exploring additional areas of interest from my online community.
Over the years I have broadened my base by writing about current events and topics that are more mainstream in nature. I also include my personal beliefs and connections in my writing, as I did when I recounted a personal story of actor and producer Leonard Nimoy and how our paths happened to cross many years ago.
As of this writing, the stories that are current and of great importance include the COVID-19 pandemic and the social justice efforts of people throughout the United States and beyond. Write about coronavirus and social justice from your perspective, add in relevant and timely details, and you will have created stories worth reading and valuable to others.
When I decided to write about coronavirus I spent days doing the research and putting together a post called Surviving in Life and Business During a Pandemic that people continue to respond to in a positive way. Instead of placing blame and coming from a place of anger I wanted to offer valuable resources as a way to help others deal with something that is affecting every living creature on the planet. Additionally, I have written and published several articles on Medium about how the pandemic is touching my life.
My way of being a part of the solution to social injustice and racial inequality is to share the stories that have shaped my own thinking and action over the decades of my life. One I would like for you to read was originally published on my new Monday Morning Mellow site here and was also syndicated on Medium. The title is Black Patent Leather Shoes.
I was just reading an article entitled Writers Can Write About Coronavirus, Social Justice, or Something Else by Stephanie Barbe Hammer. She wrote this piece after hearing from so many people she knows that they feel like they do not have the energy to write due to the crises going on, in which she gives us a writing assignment…
1. Make a list of 10 things or people that you think about at least five times a day. For example:
- My partner
- The garbanzo beans I forgot to get at Safeway
- Stamps
- The protests in Belarus
- Matthew Shepard’s parents
2. Next, look at your list and circle three of the items. Or, have a friend, roommate, significant other, or relative circle three of the items for you. If you have kids or grandkids who can read, have them pick some items.
3. Pick one. Write about it. You can free write, write a poem, or try a story that begins “once upon a time.” See where the story takes you.
The author makes many excellent points and I will use her ideas to write more stories about current events and topics that will become a part of my legacy and body of work. Please share your thoughts on this, as well as the stories you are writing so that I may include them in what I send out to my community every day.
You can increase your credibility and visibility when you write about coronavirus and other current topics. This will allow you to build a reputation as someone who has empathy for others and cares enough to take a stand. Writing is the single best way to gather your thoughts and ideas and get them in front of people from all walks of life. I can’t wait to read what you will write about on topics of importance of you and the world.
