Write Your Book in Under 30 Days: Set Reasonable Goals
You Need to Set Reasonable Goals
The most important thing you need to do when you write a book is set reasonable goals for the outcome.
And I’m not talking about schedules or progress. I’m talking about goals for the ROI — the return on investment — of writing your book.
You shouldn’t expect to become a millionaire overnight once you write your first book.
Also, be warned, people will think you’ve become super rich as soon as you’ve written just one book.
And while a book can make you a ton of money — it’s highly unlikely.
Truth Time: The average self-published book in the United States will sell only 250 copies over its entire lifetime.
Unreasonable goals include becoming fantastically rich without having to write another word ever again.
In fact, most authors I know or have worked with make their money by writing book after book. Each time they write, they hone their craft. They get better at it, and they build their audience more and more.
This helps them accelerate earnings with each book they write.
Secrets from a New York Times Bestseller
In my career, I’ve had the opportunity to personally interact with and learn from four New York Times bestsellers. And they couldn’t be more different from one another.
Let me share the first story now. Because it should help manage your expectations for your first book.
In grad school, I took a course from Sarah Dessen.
She’s a writer of young adult fiction, which means she writes books about angsty teens for angsty teens. And most of these books feature female protagonists.
She is tremendously successful, she has millions of fans, and her books have been on The New York Times bestseller lists. Some of those books have even been made into motion pictures.
And there’s a never-ending audience for this kind of book. After all, there are new teenagers every year.
The books Sarah writes are so far from the content I create that it’s like day and night.
And that was true even when I was a graduate student focused on German literature, linguistics, and economic integration into the European Union.
But Sarah shared something with me (and the rest of my class) that I still keep in mind to this day whenever I’m talking to anyone about writing a book:
Your first couple of books will not be your best.
They may not even be good.
And in fact, they might be complete throwaways.
I took Sarah’s class back in 2000, and self-publishing was not yet a thing. So, if a formal publisher didn’t like your book, it wasn’t going to see the light of day.
But two decades — and two dozen books — later, I look back at my first couple of books very much the same way that Sarah described.
This is why you can’t even find them online anymore.
I share this story to help temper your expectations.
You can only be sure of one thing when you write your first book: It will be your first book.
As with every other skill or talent, the more you practice, the better you will get at it. And so it is with writing.
But the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step, and you need to start somewhere.
This is why writing a book for a narrow audience is fine.
You might not make it to The New York Times bestseller list or even an Amazon bestseller list, but you may be able to monetize your book into hundreds of thousands of dollars or more.
If you target the right audience, you should expect to get some recognition from the books you write.
For me, that usually means some congratulatory remarks on social media. And maybe the opportunity to talk about books in the press or on TV.
But the more books I’ve written, the less time I spend on traditional media.
I'll share why in a future article.
Write the Future Course is Online Now
If you should feel you need more information and guidance on writing your book, I am excited to announce that The Futurist Institute has released a course titled Write the Future to help leaders write their books about the future to share their vision and build their brand.
Reasonable Expectations
Think back to your audience — the audience you really want to target.
And consider what good outcomes would be in interacting with them.
Would the leaders of your industry, your colleagues, and your peers be impressed with your book?
Will your book elevate your standing with them?
Will it help you gain the mental real estate?
