S&P Global Business Outlook
Key Findings from recent research for our industry sectors:
· Sharp fall in confidence across manufacturing, service sector forecasts dip slightly
· Profits outlook weakens amid concerns over rising tax and employment costs
· Capex and R&D spending plans weaken
· Manufacturers greatly reduce hiring aspirations
· AI investment plans stronger than nearly all other monitored countries
Employment and investment
Hiring and investment plans soften
The decline in activity growth expectations led to less upbeat predictions towards employment and capital expenditure in October. In total, a net balance of +18% of UK businesses expects to increase staffing levels over the forthcoming year, the lowest since October 2022. This was wholly driven by the manufacturing sector where the net balance fell sharply from +25% to +12% (services remained at +18%). Nevertheless, overall UK employment predictions remained higher than in both the eurozone (+2%) and globally (+9%).
An additional question added to the latest business survey asked firms about their recent and planned investment in Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Just over a quarter of UK businesses (26%) said that they had invested in AI in the past 12 months in October. AI investment was more common across the service sector compared to manufacturing. In the services category, a third of surveyed firms reported having financed AI already, compared to 19% of firms across the goods industry.
