Streamlining Vehicle Inspections: Enhanced Safety for RDW Workers

The Dienst Wegverkeer (RDW), responsible for licensing, inspecting, and registering vehicles, has turned to Xsens motion capture to analyze and enhance their occupational health and safety. Employees at RDW tackle physically demanding tasks like bending, lifting, and kneeling daily, which can lead to potential musculoskeletal strain. Discover how RDW proactively improves workplace ergonomics to foster a healthier, more efficient environment for inspectors.

A crash course on workplace ergonomics

We enable companies to enhance employee well-being and facility productivity with our ergonomic assessment tools. We recently hosted two workplace ergonomics webinars. The first highlighted the importance of workplace safety and its link to employee satisfaction, productivity, and injury prevention. The second discussed motion capture's role in creating safer, more productive workplaces, showcasing real-life case studies, and the return on investment of ergonomic assessments. Watch the recordings now:

You can also find out more about motion capture and its potential in ergonomic assessment in our recent blog:

Researchers from the University of Innsbruck investigated the reliability of the XsensLink system in measuring lower extremity joint angles during running. The study involved 17 recreational runners testing the system on asphalt and woodchip.

Key Findings

  • Within-day reliability: The system excels at capturing subtle biomechanical changes within single running sessions.
  • Consistent performance: Xsens Link shows consistent reliability across different terrains.
  • Frontal plane challenges: Challenges were noted in tracking frontal plane movements, suggesting areas for improvement.

I worked on integrating a motion capture (mocap) suit into ergonomic analysis within the automobile and manufacturing industries. By utilizing the mocap suit, I was able to conduct detailed assessments using REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment) and RULA (Rapid Upper Limb Assessment) methodologies. The motion capture technology provided real-time, precise data on body postures and movements, allowing for more accurate identification of ergonomic risks associated with various tasks. This approach was particularly valuable in environments where workers are exposed to repetitive motions or awkward postures, enabling more effective interventions to improve workplace safety and efficiency. Good application of mocap on how it can be used for designing a manufacturing unity.
