Year-Round Lawn Care: find it all!

Year-Round Lawn Care: find it all!

Tips for a Lush, Green Lawn

A beautiful lawn is the centrepiece of any garden, providing a serene, green space for relaxation and play. However, achieving and maintaining a lush, healthy lawn requires consistent care throughout the year.

From regular mowing to seasonal feeding and weed control, each step plays a crucial role in keeping your lawn vibrant and resilient. In this article, we'll explore the key components of year-round lawn care, including the use of fertilisers, herbicides, moss killers, and grass seeds for patch repair.

The Foundation: Regular Mowing

One of the most fundamental aspects of lawn care is regular mowing. Proper mowing practices not only keep your lawn looking neat but also promote healthy grass growth. Remember the one-third rule: never cut more than one-third of the grass blade's length in a single mowing session. During the growing season, this might mean mowing every few days. In the cooler months, you can reduce the frequency, but always keep the blades sharp to ensure a clean cut.

Feeding Your Lawn: The Right Fertilisers

Fertilisers provide essential nutrients that your lawn needs to thrive. Throughout the year, different formulations are required to meet the lawn's changing nutritional needs. When selecting a fertiliser, understanding the numbers on the label is crucial. These numbers, known as the N-P-K ratio, represent the percentage of three primary nutrients: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K).

  • Nitrogen (N): Promotes lush, green growth and is vital for photosynthesis. High nitrogen content is ideal for spring and summer to encourage rapid growth and a vibrant green color.
  • Phosphorus (P): Supports root development and is particularly important when establishing new lawns or repairing patches. Phosphorus helps lawns recover from stress and stimulates root growth.
  • Potassium (K): Enhances overall lawn health, disease resistance, and drought tolerance. High potassium content is beneficial in autumn and winter to strengthen roots and improve frost resistance.

For example, a fertiliser labeled 20-10-10 contains 20% nitrogen, 10% phosphorus, and 10% potassium. Here’s how to choose the right fertiliser for each season:

  • Spring: Use a high-nitrogen fertiliser, such as 20-10-10, to kickstart growth and achieve a lush green color.
  • Summer: Continue with a balanced fertiliser that supports ongoing growth, like 15-5-10.
  • Autumn: Switch to a fertiliser with higher potassium, such as 10-5-20, to enhance root strength and prepare the lawn for winter.
  • Winter: Use a low-nitrogen, high-potassium feed to maintain health without promoting excessive growth, such as 5-5-20.

Applying fertilisers correctly ensures your grass has the nutrients it needs to grow strong and resist disease. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding application rates and timing to avoid over-fertilisation, which can damage your lawn and harm the environment. At Suregreen, we stock a wide variety of fertilisers, including liquid and organic fertilisers.

Weed Control: Using Herbicides

Weeds compete with grass for nutrients, water, and sunlight, often leading to a weakened lawn. Regular weeding is crucial to maintain lawn health. Pre-emergent herbicides prevent weed seeds from germinating, while post-emergent herbicides tackle weeds that have already sprouted. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid damaging your grass.

Tackling Moss: The Role of Moss Killers

Moss thrives in damp, shady areas and can quickly overtake your lawn if left unchecked. Moss killers are an effective solution, especially when used in conjunction with scarification—a process that removes moss and thatch, improving air and nutrient flow to the grass roots. Apply moss killer in the early spring or autumn for the best results. Try: Nutrigrow Feed, Weed & Moss Killer.

Repairing Patches: The Importance of Grass Seed

Bare patches in your lawn can be caused by a variety of factors, including heavy foot traffic, pest damage, or disease. Repair these areas promptly by overseeding with the appropriate grass seed for your lawn type. Prepare the soil by raking and removing debris, then evenly spread the seed and water regularly until the new grass is established. We'd recommend Premier Lawn Seed - available in various sizes to suit the size of your lawn.

Aeration: Enhancing Soil Health

Aeration involves perforating the soil with small holes to allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate deep into the root zone. This process helps alleviate soil compaction, promoting healthier root growth and improving overall lawn health. Aerate your lawn in the spring or autumn when the grass is actively growing.

Seasonal Care: Tailoring Your Approach

Each season brings unique challenges and opportunities for lawn care:

  • Spring: Focus on feeding, weeding, and starting regular mowing.
  • Summer: Maintain mowing, water deeply, and apply a summer feed.
  • Autumn: Aerate, overseed, and switch to autumn fertilisation.
  • Winter: Keep the lawn clear of debris, reduce mowing frequency, and prepare for the coming spring.

A well-maintained lawn is a year-round commitment, but the rewards are well worth the effort. By incorporating regular mowing, appropriate feeding, effective weed and moss control, and timely patch repairs, you can enjoy a lush, green lawn.
