Are you among the 15% of truly self-aware individuals? If not, you're missing out on a critical leadership superpower. Self-awareness is the secret weapon that can propel your management career to new heights. Let's dive into how you can heighten your awareness and transform your leadership style.
The Self-Awareness Crisis
Recent research reveals a startling truth: while 95% of people believe they're self-aware, only 10-15% actually are. This disconnect highlights a significant opportunity for growth among managers and leaders.
Why Self-Awareness Matters
Self-aware leaders enjoy numerous benefits:
Cultivating Self-Awareness as a Manager
Here are key strategies to boost your self-awareness:
1. Seek Honest Feedback
Don't shy away from feedback, but also don't over do it. Actively ask for feedback from a colleague who you trust. Ideally it's someone who will not sugarcoat things, but also wants your best interest.
2. Identify Your Triggers
Recognize what situations or interactions cause strong emotional reactions. Understanding these triggers can help you manage your responses more effectively. Without this understanding, you just react and what we wish for you is to take some time and respond constructively.
3. Practice Mindfulness
Regular meditation or mindfulness exercises can enhance your ability to observe your thoughts and emotions without judgment. This is a side of awareness which is directed inward. It's equally important to understand how aware we are about our environment and our relationships with others.
4. Keep a Journal
Reflect on your experiences, decisions, and interactions through daily journaling. This practice can reveal patterns in your behavior and thinking. One tip: write by hand and don't type. You are using different parts of your brain when you write by hand.

The Road to Self-Awareness
Remember, developing self-awareness is an ongoing journey. Be patient with yourself and celebrate small victories along the way. As you become more self-aware, you'll notice improvements in your leadership skills and overall effectiveness as a manager.
I started my awareness journey in November 2009. I was driven to this path due to several and similar relationship problems. Little did I know that those problems turned into a blessing. I have since trained to become an executive coach, a team coach and a psychotherapist. I find so much fulfilment in guiding others closer to their true self.
