You Don't Need SEO For Your Business, What You Need Is...

As a business owner, how many emails, cold calls and even direct mail pieces have you received that promised top rankings in google, or position 1 results? I'll bet more than you can count on all your fingers, toes, arms, legs and bones in your body.

It's Not Rankings You Need...

The number one goal of your business, like the majority of businesses is to attract more clients, customers, or patients (if you own a healthcare business).

However you choose to do that, that is your main concern in your business if you have a business that you want to grow. The problem is, not knowing what the strategy should be to attract new business. You have most likely at one time or another tried SEO, PPC and even Facebook Advertising, but can I guess you didn't get the results you were promised?

Know The Buyer Journey And Pains Of Your Customer/Client

Doing SEO for the sake of SEO is the wrong approach. What you need to understand is your buyer's journey and mindset. What is their pain that you can solve with your product or service. What keeps them up at night. This is much different than going after the top keywords for a business sector.

Once you've determined buyer journey and pain points, you then can come up with a content (and SEO) strategy that incorporates those "phrases" they will type into google look for the solution (that your company offers).

When you can create valuable content that addresses your customer/client's pains, and you write in an empathetic tone, you will be speaking their language, and have a good chance to get what we refer to as "warm traffic" that is further down the buyer path.

SEO By Itself Is Not The Answer

I have had hundreds of conversations with business owners running 7 and 8 figure businesses, but not growing. They are not implementing the correct approach to gain market share month-after-month.

In order to grow into today's digital landscape, your business needs a multi-pronged approach. Yes...SEO can be one of the strategies, but PPC has got to be in the mix, or you are losing out on the "quick win's" for your business.

SEO can take 6-12 months to really get the right type of traffic from your rankings in google. This is a delayed approach to getting clients/customers...NOW!

Implementing PPC (google adwords & retargeting) you will quickly find out your markets hot buttons regarding keyword phrases and calls to action. Once you know which ones are performing (bringing in calls and new business), you can create a content strategy (SEO) to ranking in organic right along side your PPC, and get more traction from the first page of google.

Good post, Mike. Especially the "know the buyer journey...their pains, etc."

Great article Mike Pedersen. I think SEO is a bit of an outdated term these days, I don't think it does justice to what is actually required when done right and stems from a time when it was something a bit 'different' and 'new'. Now, SEO is an integral part of digital marketing but alongside social, PPC, CRO and others.

Looking at this title, I had to read further to see what you was on about. I have to say that it is great to see someone in the digital industry talking common sense for a change. I totally agree that you should never focus on one single marketing technique if you want to build real business.
