Are you driving along with your "average-health handbrake" on?

Are you driving along with your "average-health handbrake" on?

I’m not sure if this ever happens to you?

Embarrassingly it happens to me sometimes. It’s also gotten worse since I’ve had kids. I’ll blame the added distractions and the lack of sleep.

Sometimes I start driving with the handbrake still on.

I start the car, pull out and think, “what is going on here?” My progress feels a bit slow and sometimes a bit squeaky. I’ll look down at my foot and make sure I’m pushing it on the accelerator. I’ll check the handbrake and see that I didn’t take it off, or only took it off half-way.

Thankfully my kids aren’t old enough to laugh at me about it yet.

Sometimes we forget about our health like we forget about the hand brake. It’s not surprising. Our lives are packed with priorities, often in conflict with each other. It’s easy to forget, or think that we’ll get to it later.

The actions that we take impact our health whether we make them with our health in mind or not. Staying up late means that you don’t get as much sleep and reduce your recovery capacity. Not eating enough veggies means that you might be lacking in nutrients to fuel your body. Not being active will result in a lower level of physical fitness, which you need if you have to put the foot to the floor in your life.

When we forget about our health, it usually results in us putting our “average-health handbrake” on.

Just like leaving the handbrake on in the car, leaving our average health handbrake on makes our journey a lot more difficult than it needs to be. It reduces our ability to perform, can make a pretty terrible noise, and leaves us more prone to burning it out.

Taking off your “average-health handbrake” doesn’t need to be a big deal.It starts with paying attention to it, and beginning a basic routine, but it usually makes your journey through life that much easier.

What areas of your health might you be leaving your handbrake on?
