Are you focused on black dots?

Welcome to My Personal Coach - Your daily dose of Coaching Tips

You have probably heard of the experiment where a teacher shares a plain white page with a black dot in the corner with her students and asks them what they see.

90% of the kids talk about the black dot, but only one child focuses on the white section on the page and visualises clouds and sunlight.

Isn't it the same with most of us in life?

We have so many things going well for us. Instead of being happy and focusing on our blessings, and good things, we fall into the trap of searching for missing happiness.

We are constantly in awe of people who seem happier than us.

Comparison with others and trying to find happiness that others have is our fatal flaw.

We know that the mindset of seeing good things doesn't come naturally to everyone.

We must be deliberate in our actions.

We must practise looking at "positives" when something doesn't go according to plan.

We must force a positive thought and a "learning" from every negative experience.

We must look at the white space between black dots instead of focusing on the black dots and imagining how big they are.

Coaching tip 3-2-1

  • Find three things that aren't working according to plan and causing you to have negative emotions.
  • Write down two things in your favour when you think about the above.
  • Reflect on one learning every day before going to bed and how you can improve.
  • Repeat the above steps for a week and see how they change your mindset and life.
  • Is there anything I can do to help?
