Are you getting the ‘’less than impressed’’ look when you talk in English?

We’ve all been there. You are not sure if you know all the words, or how to make a sentence, and you are so afraid that you’ll make a mistake and embarrass yourself, so you just use English.

However, even though you said it right, the native German is still raising his/her eyebrows, their mouth is forming a line opposite of a smile but only on one side - like a smirk, and you still feel embarrassed.

Germans are great at letting you know they are disgruntled, but that doesn’t always reflect their emotions. You may think that they resent you for not speaking their language in their country, and some of them sure do.

But most of them are not comfortable talking in a foreign language the way they do in German.

Yes, English is a world language, but the Germans don’t think of it as a necessity. Especially if they figure out or know for a fact that you are not a tourist, but someone living in their country, hoping to become a resident.

Imagine that you’re still living in your native country and you have, let’s say, a coworker who after two years still can’t communicate in your country’s native language.

Be honest! You would find annoying the fact that you still can’t have a full conversation with them; that they are always lacking in conversation and asks you to speak a language you don’t know well enough to properly express every nuance of your opinion.

Still, understanding their point doesn’t let you off the hook – you will feel embarrassed every time you use English and the Germans give you the ‘’less than impressed’’ look.

But you know what could turn their frown upside down? Actually, speaking German.

Primarily, not to feel bad about yourself but also, so they don’t give you the smirk. We are all humans, so we tend to take people’s reactions to us very personally. Very few of us are actually immune to those kinds of reactions.

But as of my experience, as well as the experiences of my students, the change in Germans’ reactions to you when you do speak their language is enormous.

It’s like they’re instantly considering you closer to them, so you feel accepted and less lost. By talking German and absorbing the positive reactions to it, you will slowly start to feel more at home, like you finally found your place in this country, even though the only thing that’s changed is the language you speak.

That is the power of speaking German in Germany. It sure sounds simple – just learn the language, but as I felt myself, it can be challenging and get you to the verge of giving up.
