Are You A Good Samaritan?

Are You A Good Samaritan?

This month Jayne and I completed another section of landscaping at our home.

As is the case when renovating, the outside of the building works usually creates landscaping “opportunities” to bring the home’s gardens back to their previous glory, or in our case, the building works have required a redesign and a rethink of the functionality of the home’s previous garden layout.

Anyway, fast forwarding towards the end of this sectional garden renovation, and as would be the [unfortunate] case, we were needing to lay turf on a summer’s day with additional heat involved.

Not ideal.

But we’d had a similar situation last summer, and with good irrigation installed, and diligence on our behalf, we thought we were up to the challenge.

Slight problem…

Within twelve hours of the turf being laid, we encountered a significant problem.

Our pump that was recently installed to bring rain water from our  tank to the garden had stopped working.

This was the pump that was installed by our home builder only two years prior when we added rainwater tanks to capture water from our home roof, for cattle to drink as well as for garden irrigation.

And it was Friday afternoon and Jayne and I were committed to an overnight trip up to Sydney the next day.

With a forecast of soring high temperatures, we knew that our new turf would perish without automated pumping of tank water.

Our builder could not give us an answer as to what was wrong with the pump…all we knew was that if we didn’t get water to our turf, our turf would perish over the weekend.

We phoned our irrigation guy…

[let’s call him Jeff]

It was Jeff to the rescue…

Jeff came out late Friday afternoon and installed a brand new replacement pump so that we could program our irrigation to continue watering our turf while we were away on the weekend.

If it wasn’t for Jeff, we would have lost tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of lawn turf to the heat dished up by Mother Nature.

Jeff didn’t need to do this…

It was a Friday afternoon, it was twelve days before Christmas, and Jeff was already working his tail off.

But he knew that we had a problem that was out of our control, and he knew that he could act promptly and mitigate the damage that otherwise would have happened to our turf through no fault of ours.

And so he did.

Jeff went Above and Beyond by working into his Friday evening to help us avoid a disastrous result due to the failure of [what should have been] a reliable piece of machinery [the pump].

Jeff didn’t have to do that.

After all, it wasn’t Jeff who installed the pump two years prior.

Jeff chose to help us because that’s the kind of person he is.

Are you that kind of person?

Are you the kind of person who will stop and help a person in need, even if you’re not “invested” in their troubles, because it’s the right thing to do?

Or would you be the kind of person who would say:

“I’ll be there Monday”

knowing that your delay would cause significant additional damage?

After all, it wasn’t your fault they found themselves in difficulty.

I guess some people are made out for taking on the role of being a Good Samaritan.

And others would never assume those roles…

Which are you?

Do you ignore people in trouble?

Or are you always up for the role of offering a helping hand?
