What is an Innovator Founder Visa?

The Innovator Founder Visa is a remarkable opportunity designed for international entrepreneurs seeking to establish groundbreaking businesses in the UK.

Specifically tailored for individuals driven to create ventures that stand out in a league of their own, this visa pathway was previously known as the "Innovator Visa," a successor to the Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) Visa introduced in March 2019.

What are the Eligibility criteria to apply for an innovator Founder Visa?

Eligibility criteria for applying for an Innovator Founder Visa encompass a range of key requirements. These criteria are designed to ensure that individuals who seek this visa are genuinely committed to driving innovation and contributing positively to the UK's business landscape.

General Requirements:

Fit and Proper Person: The endorsing body will assess your character and background to confirm that you are a suitable candidate to receive endorsement under the Innovator Founder route. This evaluation ensures that individuals with a genuine commitment to ethical business practices and innovation are granted the visa.

Funds Source: The endorsing body will scrutinise the source of the funds invested in your business. It's important to demonstrate that the funds originate from legitimate and lawful sources, fostering transparency and integrity in your entrepreneurial endeavour.

Absence of Illicit Wealth: To maintain the integrity of the visa process, the endorsing body will ensure that neither you nor your business is associated with illicit or unexplained wealth. This is crucial to prevent misuse of the visa pathway and to uphold the UK's standards of financial integrity.

Business Requirements:

New Business Idea:

Your proposed business should be entirely new, meaning you cannot join an existing business that is already in operation. The focus here is on fostering fresh, innovative ideas that contribute to the diversification and expansion of the UK's business landscape.

Innovative Concept:

Central to the Innovator Founder Visa is the notion of innovation. Your business idea must stand out as an original and inventive concept that differentiates itself from anything currently available in the market. This emphasis on innovation underscores the UK's commitment to nurturing groundbreaking ideas.

Viable and Growth-Potential:

Your business concept should exhibit viability and demonstrate the potential for substantial growth. This entails presenting a comprehensive business plan that outlines the path to success, including strategies for expansion, market penetration, and financial sustainability.

Scalability and Job Creation:

A key element of your business plan should be scalability. You must outline a clear roadmap for how your venture intends to scale up its operations. This includes creating jobs within the UK and expanding into both national and international markets. Providing evidence of your capacity to generate employment and contribute to economic growth is vital.

Language Proficiency Requirement:

Proficiency in the English language is essential for your application. You should have the ability to speak, read, write, and comprehend English. Typically, you will be required to provide evidence of your English language proficiency when submitting your application.

What are the privileges and limitations associated with an Innovator Founder Visa?

The Innovator Founder Visa offers a world of opportunities, allowing you to:

  • Create Your Ventures: Dive into entrepreneurship by launching one or even multiple businesses. Your innovative ideas can now find their home in the UK market.
  • Work for Your Brainchild: Be your own boss! Take up roles as a director or join forces as a self-employed partner in your business ventures.
  • Explore Beyond Your Business: Embrace skilled work opportunities outside your startup. If you're eyeing roles in the Skilled Worker eligible occupations list or those needing higher qualifications, you're good to go.
  • Unite Your Family: Your loved ones matter too! Bring your partner and kids along as dependents, and let them share in your UK adventure.
  • Travel and Return: Stay connected with the world. Travel abroad and then easily return to your exciting business journey in the UK.
  • Build Your Home: After three years in the UK and meeting certain conditions, you could apply for indefinite leave to remain, setting the foundation for your future here.

However, there are a few things this visa doesn't cover:

●       While you can't be a pro athlete or sports coach, your entrepreneurial journey is the real match you're winning!

●       While building your empire, remember this visa doesn't grant access to most benefits (public funds) or the State Pension.

Are You Considering Switching to the Innovator Founder Visa?

If you're already in the UK on a different visa, you might have the opportunity to switch over.

It's worth noting that your partner's or child's visa won't automatically switch alongside yours. If they don't switch, their visa remains valid until its original end date. They have the flexibility to apply with you or before their current visa expires.

Remember, it's a smart move to apply before your current visa reaches its expiry date.

Now, let's talk about eligibility. You can make the switch if you meet the requirements. For those currently on a Student visa, you must have either:

●       Completed the sponsored course you were studying, or

●       Engaged in PhD studies for at least 24 months

However, there are a few instances where the switch isn't possible. You can't switch to this visa if you hold any of the following:

●       Visit visa

●       Short-term student visa

●       Parent of a Child Student visa

●       Seasonal worker visa

●       Domestic worker in a private household visa

●       Immigration bail

●       Permission to stay outside the immigration rules (like compassionate grounds)

The way each requirement is broken down, from the general eligibility criteria to the specific business and language proficiency aspects, is incredibly helpful. And the privileges associated with the visa, along with the limitations, give a well-rounded view of what to expect.
