Journey to find my home (and how can you find it too anywhere you live)

I am lost, I do not know where is my home’, with a mixture of sad and confused feeling I told to Dr. Thomas Culhane.

Good for you.’, he replied promptly.

This is one of the many many conversations I had that prompted me to write this article. The goal is to help many others who are lost like me to help them find their home and happiness.

My journey to find my home started some time ago. For many people (and my parents) home is a simple concept: A place where you have friends, family, job and a physical place to sleep. But in my case, it is much more complicated. I am constantly moving from one place to another and my friends are spread all over the world.

Finding home is an essential part of my happiness. It is a place where I feel safe and secured. And if I do not have home, I end up being unhappy and lost.

So where is my home?

  • Is it the place where I was born? I left India 15 years ago so that can’t be my home.
  • Is it the place my parents live? I visit my parents once a year, that also can’t be my home.
  • Is it the place I live now? Well, I have been living here for last 6 months so that may be too short to be home.
  • Is it the place where I have most of my friends? I have friends all over the world many of whom are themselves lost.

So search for a home began: Started upside down

Attempt 1: External factors

We all tend to build home around our external environments. A guy I met in Berlin told me that a home built on different pillars - so if one pillar goes away you still have other pillars left.

I listed my 4 pillars

  • Friends & Family
  • Startups (work + intellectual)
  • Activities (spiritual, NGO, sports)
  • A place with people from all over the world

And indeed when I listed the cities I have been and where I felt best, the metrics were quite accurate. But this will mean I have to live in one place for some years before I have a home.

Attempt 2: Values that make me happy

Instead of looking at external factors, I thought I list the values that are important to me that makes me happy and maybe when I have those values, I will be at home.

The three values that are essential to me are:

#love: Sharing and receiving love. I do not mean love only as romantic love but also love is caring, understanding for anyone.

#growing and learning: I like to constantly grow and learn - spiritually, intellectually and professionally.

#contributing: Whatever I learn I feel the need to give back to the society. I worked for ROSEvzw (NGO helping schools in India), Oxfam and UNICEF and those were some of my best memories. Now sharing my knowledge via speaking and writing gives me immense pleasure.

So maybe my home is a place with lots of love, growth, and contribution to others.

Perfect in theory! But how to get to that home?

Attempt 3: Finding myself

I realize to find the true happiness I have to true to myself and follow my heart.

the universe reveals its secrets to those, who dare to follow their hearts.

I started doing hours of meditation to look inside to find the place where I feel safe and loved. No one can take that away. After hours I realize it is a place where I am a child with an open heart and no fear of being hurt.

A child is open, smiling, learning, growing and sharing things with others. He is not afraid to be hurt. And he is always happy and smiling.

During one such meditation routine, I went back to nice memories from childhood and it made me peaceful and calm. I felt at home. So if I am always like a child - I will be at home. It is inside me and not dependent on any external factor.

Connecting the internal and external world

While searching for answers I came across this wonderful video by Ajahm Brahm. Ajahn Brahm is saying not to build relations on expectations but on love, care, kindness, and understanding.

So I did a small experiment - I picked up 5 people and just wished them ‘Have a nice day’. I had no expectation from them. And immediately I felt good, without even waiting for any response. Some may think I am crazy, some may think I am trying to impress or show something

“If you do good, people may accuse you of selfish motives. Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have and you may be hurt. Give the world the best anyway. It was never between you and them anyway.” - Mother Teresa

So here is my home:

A place where I am like a child and sharing values that are most important to me with the external world.

This is a home that I will have anywhere I go. It takes a lot of effort to find a home. But now that I have found it, I do not want to lose it again. I can see the changes in me. I have a lot of enthusiasm and peace inside me, which reflects in everything that I do. And I will recommend everyone to find their home and happiness inside too.

So here is advice to those who are looking to find their home and happiness inside:

  1. Meditate to answer the question 'Who are you'? Find the home inside by following your heart. Something that makes you truly happy without any external factor.
  2. List the values that you relate to 'Who are you?'.
  3. Build relations with the external world based on those values.

It will be a daily struggle as one needs to be consciously aware and make daily decisions. But this seems to me the right path! And once you are there, you will be truly happy.

Few things that can help additionally:

  1. Believe that God or Universe or whatever you believe in is there with you always - There is always a good reason for everything in life. You may not see it at certain times but there is.
  2. Take care of both emotional and physical health. I started doing intermittent fasting (between 18-20 hours) and I can highly recommend it to anyone.

I want to thank specially to Dr. Thomas Culhane, Basia Kubicka, Michael Burkhardt, Rajiv Dinesh, Joanna Kuźniacka and many others for sharing their thoughts with me and helping me find my home.

Brawo - you found it. A true home is within ourselves. Having control over the ego and the emotional patterns, makes us not only deeply connected to our true SELF (not ego). It also connects to all living being that exists. I do not ask myself "How am I?" - this brings more suffering and swirls my mind. Simply by sitting and observing myself - all the mental processes going on in my mind, then becoming calmer and less attached, I discover the purpose anyhow. We are universally made to be aware, connect, share and love. This is our true purpose - and there are countless ways to bring these values to the world. Like writing such articles to helps others. Thank you Rudradeb!
