A thought for your classroom…

Look up the fifth student on your register, intentionally notice them all week and try to answer the question ‘Are you missing something about their learning?’ ’What have you discovered that makes things better for them?’ ‘How can you lift their chin just a little higher by the end of a lesson?’

Why the fifth child? Why not! When you’ve looked at the fifth child differently, move onto the ninth.

Rosenshine’s Principles in Action (Tom Sherrington)

The book image is in the middle of the text because everything in this short read needs to be in the center of your planning and delivery! Tom Sherrington will appear three times in these advent recommendations because he is a straight-talking genius!

Fifty pages of clearly explained application and thirty pages of the original learning principles needs to part of your bookshelf. I have annotated my copy of this book so much that I’ve had to use different coloured pens to clarify my trains of thought! Follow the four strands; modelling, questioning, reviewing and stages of practice to finally get to grips with making learning stick. Remembering for a purpose, recalling with understanding, developing with critical thought are all possible student outcomes of the ideas within these covers.
