Are You a Thermostat or a Thermometer Leader?
When it comes to leadership, there's a critical difference between being a thermometer and being a thermostat.
A thermometer reads the temperature of its environment—it reflects what's happening around it but doesn't create change. In contrast, a thermostat sets the temperature, adjusting the environment to the desired level. It can bring heat when needed or cool things down when necessary. A thermostat is a change agent, while a thermometer reacts.
In any culture, having people who can act as thermostats is vital. They align with the values, bring positivity, foster engagement, and inspire others to do more and do better. When challenges arise, however, it's often easier to slip into the role of a thermometer, merely reflecting the current atmosphere. It's a natural response, but it doesn't drive change. True leaders must be vigilant, continually monitoring the environment and making the necessary adjustments to keep the culture balanced—not too hot or cold, but just right.
If you’re unsure about your leadership style, ask trusted peers, family, or friends for honest feedback. Their perspectives can help you identify if you’re actively shaping or merely reflecting your environment. Consider seeking input from mentors who can provide valuable feedback to ensure your influence is constructive and impactful. The goal isn’t perfection but continual growth toward becoming a positive influence.
As we navigate challenges, big or small, remember to ask yourself: Are you simply reflecting the temperature of your surroundings, or are you actively setting it?
