Are You Using The Impact Of A 20/30 Year-Old, When You're 40, 50, or 60+?
As a 40, 50, or 60+ year old job seeker, the reason employers are willing to pay you more than 20- or 30-year old's, is a different reason that you probably think.
If you're like most job seekers, you probably think the reason you're more valuable is because of your responsibilities, experience, qualifications and skills.
That's the impact of a 20- or 30- year old.
For example, during a recent LinkedIn interview and podcast, a Gen Z internal recruiter and part-time resume writer was interviewed by a couple of Gen Z and Millennial LinkedIn employees, about describing impact to employers. From the Gen Z viewpoint, your impact is can be described by thinking about what would happen if you didn't show up. The hosts agreed with her by saying "I love that, what if I just disappeared ... what would happen?" (This is similar to most of the career advice published on LinkedIn, focused on 20-30-year old job seekers).
Basically, your job wouldn't get done, you wouldn't have fulfilled your basic responsibilities. This is fine for most early career staff positions, who aren't in roles where they're able to provide more impact than just showing up.
Employers are unlikely to hire an age 40, 50 or 60+ candidate just because they'll show up. That's because the employers perceive that GenX/Baby Boomer candidates expect higher compensation, just due to the compounding effect of 50%-100+% greater number of annual raises you've received. Add to this the even higher raises you've gotten when you've been promoted, and compare this to the expected compensation levels of someone in their 20s - 30s ... It's natural that employers assume you'll cost more when you're age 40+.
So if employers expect that you'll cost more than someone in their 20s-30s, then the impact of just showing up won't be enough to make you worth your higher cost.
This is exactly how most age 40, 50, and 60+ job seekers present yourselves to employers on your resume and interviews. You've been taught to describe your responsibilities/ experience/qualifications/skills - The things you're supposed to do. In other words, just showing up, making you appear not only more expensive but also higher risk, when you haven't proven that you're worth a higher cost than a qualified Millennial.
When employers expect that you'll cost much more and you're applying for roles with greater importance than early career staff positions, they look for candidates who prove they can do more. So just showing up and being qualified isn't enough to make employers see that you're worth higher that higher cost.
(Ever been frustrated that employers can't see why they should hire you? That's why.)
But this is a perception you can control ...
