Are Your Business Choices Juicy Enough? Let’s Talk Apples to Apples

Are Your Business Choices Juicy Enough? Let’s Talk Apples to Apples

Hi,

This newsletter is coming from Sunny Sydney, where I have been attending the Business Blueprint conference as well as catching up with family & friends.

Last time, we talked about "rotten apples" - the people, projects, or tools that drain your energy and budget without delivering results.

As promised, we're digging into the flip side: how to make sure every dollar you spend gives you the value you deserve.

This is all about comparing apples with apples, so you're not left with a sour taste from those seemingly "cheap" choices that end up costing you more in the long run.

Below, I have covered 5 examples where it's important that you are comparing apples with apples in business & not with oranges… I've also incorporated some really cheesy apple analogies. 😊

BUSINESS TOOLS & REAL-LIFE LESSONS

Comparing Apples with Apples: The Real Story on ROI in Business

Maximising Value & ROI in Business

In the world of business, not all investments are created equal.

Sometimes, what looks like a steal is anything but - and those bargains can cost you in the long run.

Here are some classic examples where comparing apples with apples is essential to making sure you're getting true value.

1. Advertising & Marketing: Cheap Doesn't Mean Effective

  • You could spend $500 on a local ad & feel good about the bargain, but if it brings zero results, that's $500 you may as well have used to buy me a nice lunch - at least you'd get some solid business advice & we'd get a nice lunch!
  • Now, look at a higher-priced ad in a national publication or use a professional to help you. It may cost more upfront, but it reaches people who are ready to buy, making it worth every dollar.
  • Real-life Example: One client initially spent on low-cost local ads but barely saw any traction. After switching to a more targeted ad in a reputable publication and using a professional to help them set up a campaign, they saw a flood of quality leads. Sometimes, the more expensive apple is just juicier.

2. Hiring Talent: Experience Trumps Low-Cost Every Time & How Fractional Executives Can Help

  • High Experience vs. Low Experience: Bringing in a less experienced hire can look like a good cost-saver, but if they need extra support, it quickly eats up time & resources. And do you have the time & resources to give them so that you get the right results? By contrast, experienced hires tend to hit the ground running, make fewer mistakes, & often complete tasks more efficiently.
  • Real-life Example: One of my clients initially hired a junior employee, thinking they were saving money. However, the time spent on training & fixing mistakes added up, slowing down the whole team. When they replaced this role with an experienced hire, productivity soared, & everyone was free to focus on growth rather than handholding.
  • Full-Time vs. Fractional Executive: For roles where you need senior-level impact but not a full-time commitment, a Fractional Executive can be a game-changer. Fractional Integrators, for example, bring in high-level expertise & get things done without a full-time salary. They work just one or two days a week, delivering focused, high-value results.
  • Real-life Example: A client struggling with stalled projects brought in a Fractional Integrator from Integrated Executives. Instead of a full-time commitment, they paid for a few focused days each month. They almost immediately saw increased productivity & alignment. It proved to be the perfect solution, offering senior talent without the full-time cost.

3. Technology Investments: Don't Skimp on Your Backbone

  • Going for the budget option in software or hardware might seem savvy until it breaks down or requires constant workarounds, costing more than you planned.
  • A quality tech investment might be pricier upfront, but it often delivers reliability & longevity, saving you hassle & hidden costs.
  • Real-life Example: One of my clients chose low-cost software initially, but frequent breakdowns forced them to make unplanned upgrades. They eventually invested in a reliable system that brought stability, proving the importance of choosing your "apples" wisely.

4. Sales & Lead Generation: Quality Beats Quantity Every Time

  • Mass marketing has its appeal - more eyeballs, right? But if it's not reaching the right people, it can be a wasted effort.
  • Instead, putting resources into targeted lead generation can cost more per lead but is far more likely to attract clients who actually convert.
  • Real-life Example: I worked with a client who initially tried to cast a wide net but struggled with conversions. After refining their target audience, they saw much higher returns. It's a classic case of quality over quantity - sometimes less is more!

5. Consulting Services: Why My Flat-Fee EOS Approach Brings Real ROI

  • Here's where the "apples" comparison gets really juicy. Other consultants might lure you in with an attractive rate, only to tack on session room fees, catering charges, book fees—anything they can find to squeeze more out of you.
  • In contrast, I keep things simple and straightforward. My flat-fee EOS model covers everything: materials, support, and sessions (for Auckland and Melbourne clients)- no hidden fees, no surprise costs.
  • Real-life Example: A client who'd previously been stung by a consultant's "extras" found huge relief with my all-inclusive model. They could focus entirely on getting results without watching costs rack up. When you choose the right apple, you get value without the run-around.

Every business decision can fuel growth- or drain resources & every dollar you spend should deliver, plain and simple.

One of the best ways to ensure you're choosing the right "apple" every time is by relying on solid data. In EOS, we put a huge emphasis on the Data Component because tracking the right numbers gives you a clear, objective view of what's really working in your business.

With the right data, you'll know if that marketing spend is delivering, if the experienced hire is pulling their weight, & if your investments are generating real ROI. Data doesn't lie- it keeps your decisions grounded & aligned with your goals, cutting through the noise of gut instinct or guesswork.

When you're ready to make data-driven, value-packed choices for your business, reach out. Let's pick the right "apples" together to help you grow & succeed.

MEET OUR TEAM

In this section, I introduce the team & our Trusted Partners.

This week, I'm thrilled to re-introduce Dashania Lingham , my executive assistant who's been working alongside me for a  few months now.

Since she joined, Dash has fully immersed herself in the EOS methodology, diving into the details of our processes. She's been tuning into videos and podcasts, continuously building her knowledge to ensure she's providing the best support possible, not just for me but also for my clients.

It's been a busy time, but her commitment to her work is unwavering.

What makes your approach unique in your industry?

As Debra's Executive Assistant, I focus not just on administrative tasks but on enhancing Debra's overall efficiency and productivity.

My approach is rooted in proactive problem-solving, anticipating needs, and integrating strategic planning into daily activities. This means I'm constantly identifying opportunities to streamline workflows, optimise time management, and enable Debra to focus on high-priority objectives.

My philosophy is that an Executive Assistant should be a strategic partner, adapting to changing needs and consistently adding value through thoughtful, detail-oriented support.

Can you share a success story where you made a significant impact for a client?

Though I have only been with Debra's team for a few months, I have already been able to make a noticeable impact by improving response times for our clients. Given Debra's busy schedule, she cannot always respond immediately, and clients often request time-sensitive or pertinent information to continue their EOS journey effectively.

By stepping in and managing these communications, I ensure that clients receive timely responses and the support they need. This prompt response time helps clients stay on track and feel supported throughout their process, reinforcing a strong relationship with our team and allowing them to focus on implementing EOS with confidence.

What challenges do you see your clients commonly face, and how do you help them overcome these?

One common challenge Debra faces, as many executives do, is managing time efficiently amidst competing priorities. With numerous obligations, it can be challenging to stay focused on both immediate tasks and long-term goals without something falling through the cracks. I address this by keeping Debra focused on tasks, deadlines, and key objectives, ensuring that these priorities are regularly discussed in our meetings. I set clear deadlines for each item to help maintain momentum and ensure nothing is overlooked.

Additionally, I proactively assess areas where I can take over responsibilities, allowing Debra to dedicate her full attention to EOS and our clients. This approach ensures that Debra can deliver high-quality service and remain focused on her strategic role while clients receive the timely support they need.

What trends are you noticing in your field, and how do you adapt to stay ahead?

The role of Executive Assistants is increasingly shifting from traditional administrative support to more strategic, partnership-based responsibilities. This includes involvement in project management, data analysis, and using tech tools to streamline workflows.

To stay ahead, I continuously expand my skills in these areas, leveraging new technologies and systems to bring more efficiency to my role.

What is the most common mistake you see businesses make, and how can they avoid it?

One common mistake is underestimating the strategic role an Executive Assistant can play within an organisation. Many businesses still view assistants solely in a supportive, reactive capacity.

To avoid this, I encourage Debra and, at times, myself to see assistants as partners who can contribute to long-term goals. Businesses can fully leverage the EA role as a valuable asset to leadership and organisational success by engaging them in planning discussions and encouraging a proactive, partnership-based approach.

FIND OF THE WEEK

During my recent visit to Orange for the Business Blueprint Conference, I caught up with friends & explored the local farmers' markets.

We stumbled upon something special from Small Acres Cyder, & I just have to share it with you!

Their cider is truly a standout.

It has a crisp, refreshing flavour since it's made with locally grown apples. And it's not just us who think so.

Their Pink Lady Apple Cider even took home an award! See it for yourself here.

Award Winning Cider

It was crowned champion at the recent Orange City Life event. Now you know I'm not exaggerating its quality and taste.

If you're ever around Orange or just a cider lover in general, this one's definitely worth a try.

I've included the link below so you can check out Small Acres Cyder yourself & maybe even order a bottle or two.

Cheers to discovering local gems!
