Is your Consulting Ship on the Right Course?

Is your Consulting Ship on the Right Course?

I started my Talent Acquisition career over 20 years ago, with boutique / niche consulting firms. I find myself, again, with an amazing team of industry experts at Origin. My career and my passion are wrapped around matching great talent to great companies. One thing I know from this mission: You must be cognizant of the trends in your industry to ensure that the ship you have chosen to sail upon is on the right course.

Through this article, I hope to reach out specifically to the consultants in our space, whether you are at a smaller firm, or if you are on a small team within a massive firm. Origin provides software, services, and managed solutions to the modernizing utility industry. However, anyone working in consulting or considering charting a course into a consulting career could benefit from this article.

Trends Shaping the Industry

Tailor-Made Solutions

A key strength of a firm that will both survive and thrive in the current economy is the ability to deliver ‘tailor-made’ solutions while in the context of rigorous testing and demonstrated industry experience. According to Thomas Reisenweber, CEO of Consulting & Management at umlaut, "Consultants are expected to know the operational reality of customers, and offer adapted services that meet industry, functional, and client context.” Is your current consulting firm implementing the same “off the shelf” solutions it was 3 to 5 years ago, or is it consistently modernizing and updating your clients’ environments? Further, is your firm developing specialized, configurable, and scalable solutions for your clients?

One key feature of new solutions that trend-spotters are watching for is AI-Augmented services. Taylor Larson, Director of Strategy and Behavioral Design at Reve Consulting is watching for proprietary algorithms that extend a firm’s capabilities or validate their recommendations and data. More on this in a bit.

True Business Partner

Taylor Larson also believes that consultants will be expected to go beyond just technology implementations – that they will also need to support their clients’ capabilities and growth throughout and beyond their engagement. Taylor calls this being “Cultural Catalysts.” Consultancy.UK refers to it as “becoming a sparring partner” with your client, building multi-year relationships through ongoing engagement and support. I consider it fundamental to being a TRUE business partner. Does your firm look to deliver value to your client or just to run up the tab? Does your firm look to spot trends and offer assistance that will impact both currently active clients as well as former and future clients?

Less Strategy – More Results

Most experts agree that while relationship is key and having the best value in mind for your clients will continue to win business, clients are less interested in big strategic plans that ask broad-brush questions and more interested in results-focused solutions that lead quickly to modernization and transformation. Emily, a Consultant with Boston Consulting Group, said on the PrepLounge forum, “More implementation projects, not just strategy projects or white papers.” The team at Consultancy.uk said, “clients are increasingly asking to see tangible benefits of strategic work…making sure that it can be aligned with operational reality in a demonstrable way, with quantifiable results.” Is your firm improving profitability, efficiency, growth, and stability for your clients? Can you measure it?

Industry Expertise

There is a clear trend toward specialization in the industry. Clients want true SME’s for their business. Generalists may have thrived in the past, but consultants and their employers must own their niche (or find one). Consultancy.uk posited, “It is not for nothing that many industry consultancies are thriving, despite having been thought of as niche previously.” Reisenweber added that “an in-depth understanding of our clients’ industries’ vertical is a prerequisite, if we are to apply methodology and technology in an efficient and targeted way, while meeting a client’s set objectives.” An anonymous contributor to PrepLounge added that the consulting industry will become “less comprehensive and more focused on the specific roadblocks in the business.” Finally, Drew Stevens of Stevens Consulting Group added, “Clients have real issues and seek real expertise to resolve them.” What is the depth of expertise of your firm, in the niche industries it is serving?

Modernization and Innovation – Through Technology

Computerization, digitalization, and data-driven solutions will dominate the consulting industry. Firms that are winning are focusing on innovations that capitalize on all available technology, from AI and machine learning to robotics and human-computer-interfaces. Consultancy.uk asserts that firms destined to thrive will show their clients how “using data can improve their customer experience, enhance their internal operations, streamline processes, and bolster innovation with fact-based strategies. If consultancies cannot adapt to the data expectations of their clients on these terms, they will find life increasingly difficult.” Ray McKenzie, Founder & Principal of Red Beach Advisors, sees “continuous development of new software, tools, and applications to accomplish strategic goals,” which will lead to further specialty by consulting firms, along with their growth and expansion.

Good article. SMEs need to be real and able to drill down on specific needs for measurable and timely results. However, recognize also that not everything needs to be tailor made, some well tried and tested implementations have their place also. As consultants we do need to thoroughly understand our clients business and immediate needs but also let's not make mystery of good solid standard expertize and management.
