Dear Partners, Friends, and Colleagues,
As we approach the festive season, I want to take this opportunity to reflect on the year that has passed and look forward to the new year with hope and renewed energy.
Being someone strongly dedicated to social sustainability, navigating the landscape of potential change often feels like treading through murky waters. I have several times been asked how I don't lose hope or motivation…
The answer is simple: I can't!
As I have said before – my journey is one of privilege, and with privilege comes responsibility. I see it as my duty to engage in this transformative work holding myself accountable as a bridge between the corporate world and social sustainability endeavors.
2024 has again been a year marked by global crises and polarized societies, we face increasing threats to stability and human rights. Our worldview has grown darker.
Why are we witnessing these developments, and what forces are driving them?
Rising inequity undermines societal stability and democratic values. This instability fosters hatred and threatens to weaken the democratic institutions designed to protect individual freedoms and rights.
This situation has placed Social Sustainability on the agenda like never before. Social sustainability is crucial for democracy—to protect human rights and to promote safety, equality, and justice, both in organizations and societies. Therefore, the SHE Conference consistently highlights how businesses, politicians, and civil society can contribute to a world where everyone feels safe and included. This mission is more important than ever and will be a significant focus of next year’s conference.

We do not have to agree on everything, but we have a collective responsibility to work together to counteract this development!
It is about standing together for the values that bind us: Respect, Inclusion, Justice, and Human Rights. The current state of the world fuels my passion for why the social aspect is essential for a sustainable future—for us and for all generations to come. We must dare to challenge the status quo, illuminate structural problems, and actively work towards systemic changes. It is this type of collaboration that can create real change and promote a common set of values that contribute to positive transformation.
Together, we have the power to influence development. When we stand united, regardless of background or political stance, we have a genuine opportunity to shape a safe and just future for generations to come. Let us seize this opportunity, empowered by knowledge, collaboration, leadership and responsibility.
