Your current situation is NOT your final destination or is it?

Whilst there is much talk about “Business Resilience” these days, and its 4 main areas:

• Continuity: Allowing your business to continue during disruptions
• Finance: How prepared you and your business are financially
• Crisis Management: How you cope when the unexpected happens
• Technology: Protecting IT services and ensuring continuity

...What about the human aspect of “resilience” and what keeps us going during the early stages, the challenging stages, and the ability to deal with (and overcome) the many hurdles of starting and running a business?

Some would argue that there can be no  compromise as to who will run your life.  Some would argue that the same is true when it comes to starting and running your own business.

You can either choose to take control or you can allow circumstances to get the better of you. With life as in business there will inevitably be setbacks, challenges and many lessons will be repeated until you learn from them and apply that learning as you work towards your goals.

I’m reminded of the sage advice given by Sylvestor Stallone in Rocky VI, and feel it should be given to every start-up entrepreneur:

“Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows, it's a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, nobody is gonna hit as hard as life! But it ain't about how hard you can hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep movin' forward, how much you can take...and keep movin' forward. That's how winning is done! Now, if you know what you're worth then go out and get what you're worth! But you gotta be willing to take the hits and not pointin' fingers sayin' you ain’t where you wanna be because of him or her or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain't you! You're better than that!”

Don’t get me wrong for you will have good days, excellent days, even brilliant days when everything goes swimmingly well, and you generate new leads, convert leads into sales and win back old customers.  You will have phenomenal days when there’s absolutely no stopping you and you are positively on fire…

…And it’s true, you will.  However, remember the bad days and when everything goes wrong, and you are unable to make headway or progress and everything you try or think of simply doesn’t work.

You need to be prepared to work harder, and longer than anyone else. You need to be committed and passionate about what you do, and prove to yourself that the buck stops with you and that you are the master of your own destiny.

More importantly you need to identify and remember the previous “lessons” when the chips are down, and use these challenging times to identify how you can improve the way you approach people, situations and events, and how you take responsibility for finding and implementing solutions to your challenges.

After-all, it’s no-one else’s fault for the choices you make or the decisions you take.  You must be willing to do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do. When your past actions and flexibility demonstrate that you are a person who takes their responsibility seriously and are a person of action, then you will be able to deal with any challenges that life or business throw at you.

It’s very easy to become discouraged by setbacks or poor results, but it takes more than just a flash of inspiration to succeed at being self-employed. It needs determined, persistent action and the ability to control your emotional reaction to situations, events and setbacks.

For setbacks are just that – temporary, they are not permanent failures. They are excellent opportunities for you to re-evaluate your existing plans and to consider ways of improving and preparing yourself for future success. When you view adversity as a learning experience, then be mentally prepared for bigger and greater things...

...And that's exactly where you are now, aren't you?

After all, your current situation is NOT your final destination.
