Your kids are better than you.

Your kids are better than you.

Over the weekend, my feeds were flooded with kind words and gestures for all the moms out there. (And of course, I was appropriately spoiled by my own two no-longer-so-littles. Love you guys). A lot of the talk is about the values that mom instill: compassion, empathy, kindness, generosity, etc.

Why are our politics the exact opposite of what we teach our kids?

It got me thinking: Why are our politics the exact opposite of what we teach our kids?

We teach our kids to listen well. But when we enter into the political realm, most of us are quicker to yell our beliefs than listen to those who disagree with us.

We teach our kids to treat people respectfully even if they are different, but we are quick to lump groups together and over-generalize.

We teach our kids to find common ground, and yet we spend most of our time pointing to and reinforcing division.

We teach our kids not to be bullies, but we’ve turned one of the biggest bullies there is into a role model and object of adoration.

We teach our kids to stand up for the little guy, but our politics – on both sides of the aisle, to be clear – often ignore the folks who are struggling the most.

We teach our kids to be empathetic, but we just love pointing fingers.

We teach our kids to be kind, but a lot of us can’t even be in the same room with people who vote for the other guy.

Honestly, maybe we should spend a bit more time learning from the inherent gentleness of kids, instead of trying to teach lessons we don’t follow.

Yes, big problems like the climate crisis or inequality are going to produce a lot more arguments than the squabbles of children. But it is lazy to assume we have no choice but to jump on the division train.

We can, and should, do better. Maybe some moms can help us out.
