Your Last Moments Matter

Your Last Moments Matter

Hello and welcome... to our weekly newsletter, where we share 3 things weekly to help you become a great FBP.

This week those 3 things are:

- Your Last Moments matter

- Are Finance Introverted?

- FBP Essentials; only 4 spots left

And don't forget, theFBPteam is here to help you develop a highly engaged and commercially strong finance team that other functions want to work with.... book in a call to see if we can help.

Your Last Moments Matter

Bit of a morbid title this one so I hope I haven't put anyone off.

Thankfully I am only going to talk about your last moments of interactions with people (not your final moments on Earth).

Whether that's the last moments of your lunch break, a meeting or leaving an organisation....they matter.

People remember recent events more than older events. In fact the weight of emotion that comes with recency is way more impactful than something you did a year ago.

And that memory can impact how others feel about you. Which will impact there dealings with you.

Lets consider a meeting that discussed some tough things. One person leaves that meeting frustrated in a huff, highlighting there is work to do here and they are unhappy and frustrated having to sort out someone else's mess by doing x, y and z.

Or the same meeting someone mentions to the audience that this was productive and you have full confidence we can get this sorted by doing x, y, z.

Same stuff, different attitude

What's your feeling towards the other person in those two instances?

The same when you are leaving an organisation.....and a lot of people do this.

You are frustrated and leaving disgruntled. You have two choices.

In those last few weeks really knuckle down, close off any outstandings and provide a really helpful handover

Or switch off completely, take some sick days, come in late, have long lunches and not do a lot.

Most default to the second, especially if disgruntled. And it is ruining your reputation

People will remember it.

A CFO I spoke to recently mentioned this exact dynamic. The person who put in the effort he would re hire in an instant, provide references for and mentor if asked.

The person who switched off.....he wouldn't bother.

Your reputation is everything and so always remember, Your Last Moments Matter.

Are Finance Introverted?

One of the biggest complaints I hear from finance leaders when I start to work with their teams is that "they are all introverted"

Firstly, let's dispel some myths and generalisations - not "all" finance professionals are introverted. I've profiled close to one thousand and the results are consistent....

About two thirds have a preference for introversion.

But that's all it is, its just a preference. It shouldn't define you. And it doesn't mean you can't display extraversion when you need to.

And it doesn't mean you can't be really good at it.

It just means when you are in situtaitons where it is required, that can be exhausting for you.

And so you need to manage your energy levels before and after those interactions.

Because guess what? You are going to be way more effective if you can match the extroverted people in the room than if you let introversion define you.

For me, I love nothing more than time by myself with my thoughts thinking through things. Typical introversion preference.

But my roles in the past as a finance leader, general manager and now a facilitator require me to be more extroverted and dynamic.

Can I do it, yes. But it has taken me a long time to master it, learn it and apply it consciously.

If I am not conscious about it, then I naturally shift back to my preference of introversion. And that would put any of my workshop delegates to sleep!!!

So if you have a team you think are introverts, just remember that's just their preference. Like left or right handed. You can do it the other way and they can be more extroverted, it just requires the skills, practice and know how to do it.

Reach out if this stuff is of interest and we can set about profiling your team to bring awareness to their preferences. And then show them ways they can adapt to others.

In the famous words of Luke O'Dell "Introvert, Extrovert, doesn't matter" (google it, its different!)
