Be Your Own Advocate - Mo Oursler, CMB

Mo Oursler, CMB®

Last week, I wrote about the importance of advocacy - not only for industry issues at hand but also as a prudent career opportunity. This got me thinking that we probably don’t talk enough about the latter. How often are YOU advocating for YOURSELF?

It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day ‘work’, especially in a busy industry like mortgage lending. Companies take the time to take a step back and review quarterly, annual, and other long-term goals. Do you do the same in your career? You should.

With so many things to consider when picking a job (compensation, advancement opportunity, learning/development, work schedule, flexibility, etc.), I would just encourage you to think about what is important to you. It is so easy to get caught up on what is the “right” next move, just make sure YOU are defining what’s right, not someone else. Identify for yourself what you need and want and develop a plan to achieve your goals. Advocate for yourself.

These thoughts are exactly why I’m excited about launching the Mortgage Career Exchange. I’ve spent 10+ years working alongside so many great people. I want to continue focusing on supporting the people that make our industry great.

We all know that the mortgage industry is a relationship business, both internally and externally. Yet, so many other factors impact business that many times the people aren’t prioritized. In fact, they are often the first thing to get discarded when times are tough.

If you are a mortgage professional, I hope you can say you’re in the right role, right now. Whatever that means for you – I hope you can say that. And if not, I challenge you to ask yourself “why”.
