Your Representation Matters

Your Representation Matters

Everyone knows at least 5 real estate agents- whether they have been in the business for 30 years or 3. Who you choose to work with is essential for the success of your real estate deal. But lets not just focus on the outcome- as we know, for every critical time in our lives we need to ENJOY THE PROCESS! Just about every agent can and will get the deal done- but the process leading up to signatures is almost as important as the dotted line. Purchasing a home- let alone your first home, should be one of the most exciting and enjoyable times in your life! You are finally getting to own, modify and claim your space. No more renting and wondering if the price is going to increase- no more white walls and plain Jane decor. It is time to love where you live and get out of the cookie cutter box you've been tip toeing around in.

Due to the ample amount of Agents in your area, you have the ability to pick and choose, hire and fire, and feel out who you will enjoy, trust and build a long lasting relationship with. This may not be the first agent you run into- and thats okay. It is the name of the game in a Brokers industry to gain and lose a client or two that doesn't feel fit. Alternatively- the agent also can hire and fire clients if they feel fit. As they should, if the process isn't seeming as seamless as it should be or there are personality/ view clashing. The professional should be aware of all of their clients needs up front and if they are not able to accommodate they can always refer to a colleague who can. In a perfect world, it would be seen at first meeting but that's not always the case. So a switch around of who works with who should always be in the best interest for both parties.

Now- Lets talk about how you can tell who will serve you best. There are two different types of agents; Sales agents, and relationship based agents. If you are aware of the differences, its almost always easy to spot out. A Relationship based agent will listen to your needs, hear you, and guide you (maybe with a little wind behind your back) to your best investment that checks all your boxes. A Sales agent - is always selling. "This is the one" "You'll have to settle" or any sort of convincing theory on why this and the next property are "The One" to put an offer on- when clearly the property is not what you are looking for. A sales agent will push higher budgets with no remorse - they are more worried about their commissions, over your needs.

Your chosen broker should be equipped with a list of trusted partners: Mortgage Lenders, Attorneys, Inspection companies, Title Companies, and a large network of other agents that will be in their corner. Having an agent that is well connected not only means you'll be set up for success, but that they are also reputable and trusted right back.

You also want to make sure- especially in this fast paced market, that your agent is going to be available to you. This one is key. Time is of the essence, if you see a property that is new on the market- chances are you have about 24-48 hours to check it out and beat out another offer (or 4). If you have an agent overwhelmed with the amount of clients and showings- You need to get in Monday but they cant make it happen until Thursday. You'll never grab the property of your dreams.

Keep to the golden rule when picking a Real Estate agent- Choose one that treats you, the way you want to be treated! And if they don't- off with their head and onto the next! Now, I don't condone broker hopping but when its not a fit its not a fit- no need to explain much more.

"Luxury is not a price point, It's a level of Service" This slogan hit me in the heart harder than I was ready for. It was a breathe of fresh air to how I could explain what customer service stands for. Real Estate is a customer service industry! As the client and customer- you should be able to ask for and receive any minute detail you deem necessary to make the best purchase. THIS is why your representation matters.

We can also go deep into the depths of brokerage and how an established and reputable brand backs your broker and business deal. Lets be honest, we are branded people- if you are a Heinz guy/girl... we stick with what we know. Each brokerage has its own personality and gives its own image. Personally - I'm huge on branding and exclusivity. @Properties, Compass and Berkshire Hathaway have always been reputable brands. My personal Bias goes towards Luxury- and Jameson Sotheby's International Realty holds the thrown. With the highest average sales per agent, JSIR holds 75 of the top 200 agents in the Chicagoland area. There is no question that the agents are professionals in their field. Jameson holds the slogan tight to provide all price points and clients to the luxury service provided for all. They are local, experienced, and well connected agents. Personal bias' aside - any of which you choose should serve you in the best manner.

In this market, the relationship might be short lived with a quick sale but it may take months to a year to find and win the right home- I hope you enjoy that process and make a long lasting friend and business relationship with your agent to see both of your futures unfold together. Because lets be honest, real connection and real people are hard to find- these are relationships that can and should last a lifetime.
