Your Scars Will Empower Your Successes And Your Audiences
On October 20, 2000, I got some very bad news. I was one of four founders of a company called BIGWORDS.com. We had raised over $80M to become the go-to college textbook and lifestyle site. But, on October 20th, our investors told us that they didn't think we could get profitable fast enough, and they pulled the plug.
I was devastated - ashamed - angry - sad - scared - hurt. And not very sophisticated in dealing with failure. I went into a corner to sulk and almost died of an autoimmune disease brought on by stress and fatigue. (Check out my short 16-minute talk about it at STARTUPFEST here.)
Now, I am the Official Pitch Coach for the Cisco Global Problem Solver Challenge, Johnson & Johnson JLABS, Houston ION, and other globally renowned incubators. I do a lot of 1:1 Executive Coaching for founders of startups. And I work with top leaders and teams at global organizations like NASA and Boston Scientific to help them with their leadership communications.
I'm good at what I do because I include the scars from my unsuccessful journey as a startup founder. Those lessons have saved a lot of people I coach from making similar mistakes. I love the saying, "Your superpower is always located right next to your scars." My success arises out of my pain.
You've got a lot to offer based on your scars! IT'S ABOUT YOUR Insightful Vulnerability™ noting where you failed and what you've learned. Bringing one or two of these meaningful moments into your Origin Story will make a huge difference in how others relate to you.
So, think about your scars and consider what you've learned. Then, pay it forward by sharing your insights and SUCCESSES!

How to Get Booked and Paid to Speak
Grant Baldwin is the founder of thespeakerlab.com where he teaches speakers how to get booked and paid to speak consistently. We talk about the value that speaking can provide to you and your life, whether you do it full time or just a bit.
We discuss the biggest fallacy that stops many people from becoming successful speakers. We also discuss the importance of being GREAT both onstage and offstage, how the best marketing for a speaker is a great speech - (have you ever been to Baja Burrito in Nashville!), and he shares the SPEAK speaker's roadmap.
We discuss the Bates Equation of Public Speaking and recommend you watch Comedian, a documentary about Seinfeld, because it is such a great learning experience. We close out with some of the "messes" of his speaking career and what he learned from them.
