  • Traditional access control methods, like keys and call boxes, have existed for decades. So have their inherent security risks, like the ability to lose physical keys, accidentally buzz in unwanted visitors, and share access codes with bad actors. But, thanks to smartphones, cloud computing, NFC technology, and more, smart access control solutions that heighten security and enhance convenience are on the horizon. Find out what Ram Nikhil Dodda, Head of Product Management for Amazon Key, has to say about the future of access control in the piece he wrote for Forbes: https://hub.fm/EmCZo

Receiving packages on a college campus can get complicated- Lots of people order packages, but there are limited delivery windows and places for drivers to deliver. So, packages can often get delayed. This is where Amazon Key comes in. It allows delivery drivers to have secure, time-bound, trackable access to mailrooms so that they can safely deliver packages at all hours. The result is that more packages are arriving on time and more customers are getting what they need without delay. This is what we have accomplished in our work with Western Oregon University. The students there receive their packages in a “timely and secure manner,” and the administration has found the system easy to manage. I like to hear this because our goal is always to provide seamless solutions, not to replace old logistical problems with new technological problems. It is wonderful seeing our product have its intended effect: Providing customers with a better experience. Questions about how Amazon Key works? Let me know down below.

When we installed Amazon Key in all Whole Foods Market locations last year, everyone benefited — from the stores, to delivery drivers, and ultimately our end customers. Amazon Key provided a seamless and secure way for grocery delivery drivers to pick up orders outside of regular business hours, increasing delivery availability times by 30%. This meant customers could get groceries delivered earlier in the morning and later at night. Visit amazon.com/amazonkey to find out how Amazon Key can benefit your business or property as well.

Amazon Key doesn’t just streamline delivery access at residences- it benefits business locations and service providers as well. We demonstrated this when we installed it in all Whole Foods Market locations this year. Throughout the process, we kept our dedication to providing the best possible customer experience at the center of our effort. We knew that many customers prefer to have their groceries delivered rather than go to the store, so we wanted to provide customers with more availability for when they could get their groceries delivered. Before Amazon Key, grocery delivery drivers could only pick up orders when the store was open for regular business. Once we installed Amazon Key, we increased delivery availability times by four hours per business day, a 30% increase above regular store operating hours. This is because delivery drivers could get on-demand, authorized access even if the store wasn’t open, meaning they could enter the store before or after normal business hours. This allowed them to provide more availability to customers. This enabled customers to get groceries delivered earlier in the morning and later at night than they used to. Customers now had more freedom in getting their groceries delivered, and Whole Foods Market could now accept orders earlier and later in the day, as well as accept delivery returns after closing. It was also a hit with the delivery drivers. Feedback from drivers was overwhelmingly positive, saying “[I would] rate it at 5/5” and “Easy to Use.” Creating a streamlined, positive delivery experience for end customers, businesses, and delivery service providers nationwide is a major benefit of installing Amazon Key. Thanks, WFM, for your partnership!

UC San Diego is ranked in the top two for student housing capacities in the nation. With all the packages they receive, their mailroom is busy. The staff wanted to identify a solution for simplified package delivery to make it easier on their employees and students. The challenge was that delivery drivers from Amazon and other services had to arrive during mail room hours, otherwise they struggled to deliver the packages. And, the mail room was only open during normal business hours. The result was that many packages could not be delivered if drivers got caught in traffic or couldn’t find a parking space, and couldn’t arrive before closing. UCSD staff discovered Amazon Key, had it installed, and now drivers can deliver Amazon packages outside of mail room hours. They have time-bound, authorized access to get in, deliver packages in an organized fashion, and continue on their way. As a result, their delivery process is streamlined and the campus community knows their packages will get delivered on time. In short, Amazon Key helped UC San Diego elevate their campus experience.
